Last night I watched the Screensavers for a couple of minutes, and they said that the RIAA wants computer manufacturers to build in protection that will not allow playing of any CD that is not copy protected. Now, from the little snipet I heard, this P.O'd. the CEO of Gateway computer. To the point that he claimed he was going to take out ads on national television to encourage the downloading of free music.

Has anyone else heard if this was true or not?

but I have heard voices myself after watching the screensaver for too long

usually takes far more than a couple of minutes, but I guess tolerance builds here as well as with alcohol

usually the voice of my dad, saying "get a life" over and over

comforting knowing that I'm not alone with this hearing voices thing

No I have not, but about time someone with money spoke up.
Hopefully this is for real and not just a gimmick to

Yup, saw the add last night. It's got him and the cow singing to a song from an mp3 player as they drive a semi down the road. Then they show an all black screen that invites you to download the song for free from gateway's site. Then back to the truck then back to a black screen stating something like Gateway defending your right to leagaly copy digital music.

Just another reason to quit buying commercial CDs. The record companies are hurting themselves.

This has more repercussions than that. Now they want to try and force computer makers to be the guardians of their product. No way. Imagine the drop in sales for them. Tech products of any kind could be affected. Some PDA's now play mp3 music. Are they next? My uneducated guess is that if I couldn't do whatever I wanted with a technogizmo, within its limitations, I wouldn't buy it.

The RIAA has so little confidence in the quality of their product, they have no choice but to ram it down people's throats.  I suppose it's understandable. They're accustomed to living large, but unfortunately, they refuse to "work smarter".
