Can't Burn to CD - MJ keeps crashing
« on: April 12, 2002, 02:23:47 pm »

I have tried to burn a CD using MJ's burn feature about 10 times now. It keeps crashing, and coming up with a message like this:

[Media Jukebox has performed an illegal action, etc. etc.... Details:}

MEDIA JUKEBOX caused an invalid page fault in
module NUCDR.OCX at 0167:02ba1191.

...

I have made sure I have sorted various issues out - I checked out the FAQ, got just the right ASPI install from Adaptec, went into Control Panel / System / Device Manager / CD ROMs and set the settings just as it says in the FAQ. The CD writer does work, I can use it with another program. This is not a program noted to be incompatible with MJ.

So so far I'm stumped. I'm going to have to use the other CD software that came with the CD RW rather than MJ's burn feature, which is a shame beacuse using MJ's would have the advantage of being able to co-ordinate it via the library... unless someone can tell me what's wrong and how to put it right???

There are other threads here on this problem that may help.

DirectCD from Adaptec can interfere.

I am using version 7.2.280, I am now d/ling the version 8 from the FTP address on the TalkBack thread that announces it - I will see if the burn process works in that. If DirectCD from Adaptec is software, I don't have it. The CD burning software I have that came with the device is "Nero - Burning ROM".

OK, I installed version 8, twice, and each time on starting for the first time it just crashes (freezes) on the small blue square splash screen and goes no further. Does not load up the program, and does not show an error message; does not even show up on the Taskbar as a running program. It requires CTRL ALT DEL to find and close it, and of course it shows up as "not responding". So evidently this won't work. Are there any other version 8's linked to from Interact TalkBack threads? I shall go looking for some.

Maybe it is... but how do I know what exactly?! Meanwhile I have been experimenting and found that setting the Write Speed in CD Writer options to something other than Max. Speed gets a different result... it doesn't crash, instead comes up with a specific error, "Can't set drive record speed". So what does this mean? Can MJ here not communicate with the CD RW? Why might that be?

Meanwhile, can anyone tell me what NUCDR.ocx actually does? It is an MJ file, not a Windows file, so might the problem not be in MJ rather than the OS settings?

Yours with gratitude for any help,

Mat

Well I got this CD RW in January, but I've hardly used it. I backed up my whole hard drive, and then intended to shift most of my MP3s onto CD and clear space on the drive. I wanted to do it with neat, preferably complete collections of artists' work. So I have been doing brinkmanship with hardly any drivespace left, trying to find all remaining mp3s by artist X, before I burned my data CD copy. I called it a day on that yesterday, and decided to burn with what I had... but I knew there would be problems with MJ doing the burning because I tried it with an Audio CD collection soon after I got the CD RW a few months ago, and it didn't work then.

Despite many attempts to sort out this problem over the last couple of days, I cannot seem to get MJ to burn properly. So I have just done it with my "Nero Burning Rom" software that came with the CD RW, and in future I will be looking for a new media jukebox/all-in-one, that hopefully will have all of MJ's excelloent qualities, and will enable me to burn as well. Of course, the problem could be not with MJ, but with the system, e.g. Windows, the CD RW settings etc., as has been pointed out. But I just don't know enough about these things to know how to find out.

can you go to Help, and system info, and paste the info here.

Maybe someone with the same burner can help if you post your burner info, model

i think JohnT or matt said it was part of MJ for the burner. i can't find the file on my system (Windows XP) when i looked last.

Have you tried the right-click send to... in this case the device? I just backed all my files up to cd-r about three days ago and didn't have any problems. However, I installed a burner about two months ago. Actually two different cd-rw drives. The first one came with nero software that windows just plain didn't like. Took that one back and got a different one which came with adaptec software. This one works like a charm. Part of it may be conflicts with nero software and adaptec aspi drivers.
Here is a thought. If possible uninstall nero software and let windows detect drivers. Most cd-rw drives are legacy unless they are still warm from the manufacturer. IE...latest and greatest. MJ should show what type of burner it is when you go into options > devices. Make sure it is what you have.
Other possible actions may be to use the generic driver. If you installed the adeptec drivers you may be looking at a headache there also. Adaptec and nero = not friendly with each other.
I think MJ uses some of windows media player technology. Someone else may be able to clarify on this somewhat. Windows media player uses adaptec for its burning plug-in. Again, could be causing conflict there.
I think I would try uninstalling the Nero software first and see what happens. It came on a disk with the burner, right? So you could  put it back in if need be.

Another thought, how are you sending your artist to the device? By playlist or something else. I found that if I went into albums I could just right click my way to a full cd-r that way. You kind of have to jump back to device and see how full it is once in a while.

MachineHead

I have nero installed...

Easy CD Creator - sucks (all versions) waist of money

as i said J river said it was part of MJ, but i think it only installs it if you have a Non-Windows XP system (maybe windows 2000 also)

I have Easy because it came with my burner. I don't use it to often. If I'm backing up files, or something else, it is really a simple tool to use. I never said Nero sucked, just that I couldn't make it work on my 98 SE machine. Mat M might be having similar problems that I had. It took a long time trying to narrow down what the conflict was in my case. So I was throwing out suggestions that could possibly help.
It could even be the way Mat has system configured. But I doubt it, because Mat could burn with the Nero software. Process of elimination would suggest trying MJ without other software installed and going from there.

me too, but i also bought the 5.0 hoping it was better

Nero came with my 24x10x40 yamaha burner.

it could also be the burner not supported by goldenhawk, and it don't like the generic driver.
