MC shows 2 of each song???
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:37:27 pm »

I've been battleing this since MC17, and I hoped it was unique to MC17, but I just upgraded to MC18 today and it's back.

I have all my music files painstakenly organized. I have 0 duplicate files of anything in my music folder. But on every few discs that show up in MC there is a duplicate of every song for a given album. One will play fine but when the next same song begins I get an error- indicating there is no file to be found.

Looking at the file path in MC it does indeed show a different path than what it should be. I don't change my paths for music at all, and I'm constantly going back and removing those pesky double paths from MC whenever I see them in the playback screen. But I want to know what they are and why are they crop up.

Doesn't MC know what is in the folders when it scans them? How can I fix this problem once and for all??

Maybe you have both a drive and a UNC path to the same location.

Hmmm, I wonder... are there any possible clues in your "Playlists > Imported Playlists" list in the tree?

I'm wondering if you have some stale m3u files with outdated filepaths that MC has imported?

I cannot think of anything else that might cause what you are seeing.

Dodgy .cue files might also cause this....

.cue files...hmmmmm I'll bet this is it. I have a lot of FLAC files with .cue files. Sometimes MC will show on any particular CD each song as it should, and then 1 entire CD with no separation of tracks. MC may be reading the .cue file, as well as the FLAC file. That's one problem that I know I have, but the double songs aren't .cue files as they have slightly different paths showing in MC's view.

Can you give an example paths of a set of duplicates?

Is the "slight difference" the same for all duplicates?

OK, found the problem. I have a wireless keyboard/touchpad (Logitech K400) that I use with my HTPC. The touchpad is very sensitive and can easily cause you to drag and drop an album into a different album as you navigate the cursor on the screen and move over other albums. There is no warning or indication that the move from one folder into another has occurred. This is very annoying. Upon inspecting my music library it seems I have more than a few of my albums "accidentally" moved into other artists folders. MC is doing what it's supposed to - displaying the albums in each folder. Problem is this -  it should forget the last place the album was and not display it. This is why I was seeing 2 paths (the one where the folder originally was, and the one it currently is, making the old location unplayable). The second problem is that MC should ask for a confirmation that you are moving a folder from one location into another before completing the move. I'm not the only one in my house who uses MC for music playback, and they are not as "savvy" as I am in catching these things or even knowing that they happen at all. Can this "Move Confirmation" feature be added in another future build?

Back to .cue files. Some of my CD rips are 1 continuous rip of the CD with a .cue file to give the separation cues for each song. MC, however, will display each individual song correctly, but also the 1 entire rip as well. Why does it do this? Can I tell MC to ignore this .cue file? If I remove it from the association list will I hinder the playback of these .cue rips, or will it just not show the 1 entire cue rip and still show and play each individual file as it should?
