My New Media Server
« on: January 17, 2013, 02:05:14 pm »

I'm just posting in case anyone is looking for ideas.
Its my first server, first network, and first PC build.
It went together quickly and easily with no problems.

Case:                   BitFenix prodigy
Motherboard:         ASUS C60M1-I Mini ITX with AMD 1.0GHz Dual-Core fanless CPU
Power Supply:       Silverstone ST55F-G 550W ATX full modular
HDD:                   5 x WD Caviar Red 3TB SATA 6.0 GB/s 3.5 Inch Internal
SSD:                   OCZ 128GB Vertex 4 Series SATA 6.0 GB/s 2.5-Inch
Memory:               2 x Corsair 4 GB DDR3
Fans:                   2 x Corsair 120mm, 1 x Corsair 140mm, 1 x Cooler Master 200mm
Router:                Asus RT-N65U
Monitor:               None
Other hardware:    Sata cables, 4 pin to 3 pin fan adaptors,
Sata power extensions, Cat7 ethernet cables
Operating System: Windows 8
Other Software:    JRiver 18, Truecrypt , and nothing else

Until now i used external hard drives. I had too many and my PC ran out of holes to plug them into.
Also, after using USB3 all the USB2 drives seem unbearably slow.
I transferred all my externals to the server and the externals are now backups.
The server has 16.128TB of space and is far from full. I don't plan on buying another hard drive for 5 years.

For now I'm not using JRiver's media network. Each PC is set to auto import off the server.
I have 2 decent PC's wired to the server and an old laptop connected wireless.
I tested video playback over the network by playing two different bluray rips(bdmv) and a dvd rip(ifo) at the same time over my 3 PC's. All video was smooth and played perfectly. I mounted multiple 3D bluray images off the network dives at the same time on different PC's and they played perfectly as well. The CPU never went above 30% and network speed was around 75 Megabytes/second. All is good.

One cautionary note:
The server will serve files nicely but when copying files to and from it the CPU goes to 100%.
While copying, audio and 700MB video files play fine across the network but i don't think blurays would play nicely. I haven't tested yet.

Thanks for sharing.

The fanless CPU is pretty interesting.  What's the JRMark (Help > Benchmark)?
