How to get from a track to the playlist referencing it?
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:13:30 am »

What the quick way to go from a track to the playlist that references it?

In Audio, I am viewing a track list. I select a track and right-click, Tags - the Tag panel shows "Playlists:" and the playlist name. But how do I go to that playlist?

Thanks.

if you can't click on it in that list, then I think you just need to select it from the tree on the left.  I'm not sure there is any other way.  Note: a song can appear in MANY playlists, so I can't even think of a way to 'automatically' take you to one of them.

sorry.

I can't. Can you?

I'm not seeking automatic. I'm happy to click on the playlist name in that list.

This would be a nice feature.

If a Playlist column is shown in a file list, it would be nice to be able to right click on any of the playlists listed in that cell, and have Locate > In Playlist switch views to the clicked-upon playlist within the Playlists area in the tree.

Currently, you can only Edit the playlist in the tag action window by right-clicking the playlist name in the TAW's Playlist field.

Indeed. I use this often in another program, making it hard to switch to MC without it.

MC won't have all the features you want, nor will any media player.  There's no point pursuing the Add My Single Feature Or I Won't Switch conversation (esp. for someone who has been posting since 2005).  If, on the whole, MC is not for you, its not for you.

I think it is pretty clear the folks here work hard to accommodate many requests.  I certainly have gotten way more than my fair share of feature additions.  You'll get better results by just stating your request, and hope that other folks find it useful too.  It doesn't hurt to lend a hand where you can.  ;D

This does not address your specific request, but if you are not already aware of it, you may find this method for managing playlists useful.

Create a view with two identical panes of type "Playlist Group" each pointing to the root of your playlists.

Select the view and press F4 to enable pane tagging mode.

Now using one of the panes you can filter the files belonging to any playlist, and using the second pane you can assign/reassign them to any other playlist(s).

<edit>
You can also use the same view to select a file(s) and then look at the pane to see which playlist(s) it is assigned to, then select the playlist to show all files in that playlist.

I will - when I have determined that the feature does not already exist. Which is something that (due to the state of the documentation) I have to do by asking questions such as this.

Unless you know a better way.

There's no point pursuing the Add My Single Feature Or I Won't Switch conversation

Good thing I wasn't doing that, then :)

Neat - thanks. In case it helps others, here's what it looks like:

BTW, what's this for?

I've never tried that until now but it appears it creates a new playlist in the root and assign the file to it.

Thanks.

I find pane tagging is pranged by a track being in a playlist more than once - the checkbox shows a block and I see no way to uncheckmark it.

Interesting, you are right, I never noticed this before.

If you use my method for managing playlists it is not possible for a file to be added to the same playlist more than once.

Also it seems to reorder the list. And I find no 'position in playlist' field to add as a column to sort on, to remedy this.

Yes, it is not possible to manage list position with this method.

Best scheme I've found for my playlist work is simply two MC windows - #1 showing the library of source tracks and playlists, and #2 the workpiece playlist. MC kindly allows tracks and playlists to be dragged and dropped from #1 to #2.

With the two on the same library, MC requires one to be read-only. Readonly is an advantage on #1 when I don't want the library edited by mistake, though a disadvantage when e.g. I spot an error that I want to correct there and then.

Interesting, had not thought of using 2 instances of MC.

Hoping this thread gets Matt's imagination going since playlist management has never been 100% elegant.

Another solution I've found is: right-click playlist, click "Edit Playlist in Action Window". Like the two instances solution, this gives two playlists simultaneously.

Disadvantages:
* the Action Window is quite small and I've not found a way to enlarge or relocate it.
* For keyboard users, switching is more awkward - TAB from main file list to Action Window goes out of its way to visit Search. The whole round trip is ragged so perhaps this will get fixed up.
* There are some anomalous interactions e.g. in  Action Window playlist select one instance of a repeated track, then above main window playlist click Shuffle - AW selection changes to include all instances of the repeated track.

Advantages:
* simplicity :)

Hoping this thread gets Matt's imagination going since playlist management has never been 100% elegant.
Playlist use presents many different requirements, but for mine, MC it the best of the various music librarians I've tried. If Matt does have time for playlist functionality, I hope he'll improve the simple widely-applicable stuff like the navigation (see original question), rather than very specialist features such as your neat pane-based playlist control.

Yes, it is not possible to manage list position with this method.
RJM, I can do without managing the list position, but I need to see the the playlist in natural order. Have you found a way to get this?
