Re-organising folders
« on: February 05, 2013, 12:11:55 pm »

Hi, I just bought media centre 18. One question - is there any way I can get it to re-organise songs or albums I add into the watched folder? Something like iTunes where it can re-organise once you drop something into the watched folder.

Thanks.

Can you be more specific about what you want it to do, that you are calling "re-organise" ?

Not automatically.  But And you can select the files in your watched folder and use MC's Rename, Move & Copy tool to rename the folders and files based on rules you configure.

Edit: See below.

I'm about to leave so can't test, but couldn't you use the auto import rules to apply some rules to the [filename (path)] field that automatically move the file on import?

We'll I'll be a monkey's uncle.  You sure can!

I haven't tested using various fields to see if they are populated (for use in a file / folder template), but it looks promising.

Nice.

Here's the rule I used to test:

   Filename:   M:\Testing\[Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]\[Track #] - [Name].[File Type]

It works fine.

Obviously you need more complex rules to deal with album art and other ancillary files.

I do this, to a limited degree on my two Wowza servers at the office.  It works fine, though I've been too timid (and would need your help anyway) to set up complex auto-sorting rules.

If you wanted a bit more control, you could also certainly use MCAutoQueue to accomplish it.

Right, I've managed to get it done with the "Rename, Move & Copy" tool. But I've got to do it manually AFTER it has already been imported. I went through to "Tools>Import>Configure Auto Import" but I don't see any option to do it on the fly when it's being imported. Help?

You need to add an auto-tagging rule:

   Tools > Import... > Configure Auto-import

and select the folder and Edit.  At the bottom, there is Apply the tags (optional).  This is where you add a rule for Filename, Filename (path) or Filename (name) depending upon what you want.

It would be best to test the rule in a file list view expression column first to see that it does what you expect.
