Share blu ray disk over media network?
« on: February 09, 2013, 03:07:05 pm »

Is it possible for me to put a blu ray disk in my media serve and play it from a machine connected over media network?

Yup - No probs, here is what I do:
- Rip the BD to the HDD in unencrypted form (you will need something like AnyDVD HD do to this).
- You can now play this both from the PC + any library server clients + Gizmo devices

You may need to describe your Server / Client setup a bit more for specific advice.

I want to share the disk though, not ripped files. Example:

Friend comes over and brings a blu ray for us to watch. My roommate is using the home theater so we use the tv in my bedroom. The only bluray DRIVE is in the media server computer. I'd like to put her blu ray disk in the server and then set down at the client and stream it without having to wait a few hours for it to rip first.

Sorry - read the post incorrectly.  Have you tried just sharing the Drive from Windows (like any other folder).  Eg right click on the drive in Windows Explorer --> Sharing ?  I'd imagine that AnyDVD HD would need to be running on the PC with the drive.

You'd certainly need AnyDVD on both machines for Nathan's idea.  I don't know how efficiently Windows Networking will work reading from an optical source.  It might not be fast enough.

If not, BluRay reading drives are cheap now.

Why would the client need AnyDVD? The server decrypts, and the Windows Share only sees a decrypted drive. The client should be fine without AnyDVD.

Ahh, yes.  Of course, you're right.

Just don't know if it'd be fast enough.  The throughput off of the optical disk should be no problem for Gigabit.  But it depends on how it is implemented.  I know optical disks aren't read the same way as LBA types of devices...

Never tried it.  It might work.  Apple does it over WiFi, so it probably can work somehow...

Why doesnt media server/center support streaming it natively?

Also I'm on a 10 gigabit switch. Media server and most of the clients are 10gige. Bandwidth is not an issue...

seems like this would not be a difficult feature to add?

Again, this may not be necessary.  Has anyone who wants this actually tried it?

Share the drive in Windows.  If it doesn't work, perhaps it can be looked at, but it seems like a pretty niche feature, especially when it might work fine with what Windows had built in...

Streaming Blu-ray discs is not possible right now because of the way the BD structure works - its made out of many files and the client needs access to them.
So the only way to get this to work is with a Windows share of the drive, which sounds like it could work. Important is that the drive needs the same letter on both machines, so if its H:\ on your Server, you need to mount the network share under that drive letter.
