Adding cover art rewrites media files

(8.0.239) Adding cover art stored in an external file to a group of tracks causes all the music files to be rewritten, even if the "Store image(s) inside music files when possible" box is not checked. The music files are the same length as before, but the date/time modified has changed (i.e., the cover art isn't stored inside the files.) I know the file are being rewritten because my files are on a USB drive and it takes a bit of time for all the files in an album to be copies over.

Shouldn't this be a simple case of writing link info to the database? Why are the files being recopied? If so, please fix this bug (those copies are slow on a USB drive!)
