Blu Ray 24p
« on: February 25, 2013, 02:39:12 pm »

I've tried searching for this, but this is the proverbial 'needle in a haystack'.......

When playing blu ray discs (example:  Batman The Dark Knight Rises) from CyberDVD through HDMI to TV, my TV indicates 24p -- which it should.

However when playing through JRiver Media Center, the TV says 60p.  Why won't MC play at 24p, and when (if ever) will the blu ray menus look as if they were played on a blu ray player?

CyberDVD does these things, so why not MC?  I would prefer to to MC for everything -- I've primarily bought it for audio but now more and more want to use it for video, but find it lacking.....simply can it not do what CyberDVD does?

I have noticed that sometimes, not all the time, various of my blu ray mkv files that are 24p (and tagged as 24p) don't get sent down the hdmi as 24p inferred by my TV staying on its MC default 50Hz.

Anyone else seen this or have ideas why it may be?

@6233638:

I see from the screenshot that your display supports all common refresh rates. Is there a reason why "video clock" is checked?

Or is the screenshot just an example for where the settings can be applied?

It happens sometimes that the framerate is picked up wrongly by MC (ex.: it happened to me for "Amazing Spiderman"). Just check the FPS column for the file and adjust it manually.

Yes: my display does not output exactly 23.976 or 59.94, so VideoClock is required to avoid dropped/repeated frames during playback. I also want 25 FPS PAL content output at the original 23.976 rather than 50Hz.

Actually, I would prefer 24.0 and 60.0, but there seems to be a bug in Windows 8 that causes it to switch to 23/59 rather than 24/60 for some reason.

Sorry, but I don't understand. If the source is 23.976 fps and you tell MC to output at 23 HZ (23.976), how would any reclocking occur? Source matches output exactly. If you uncheck the video clock option and play a 23.976 fps movie, do you actually notice dropped frames in madVR stats?

23.976 is technically 24/1.001

And if you set your graphics card to 23Hz, it will not be exactly 24/1.001. It will be 23.9xxxx but not exactly 23.976..

I have found that without ReClock or VideoClock, there will be dropped/repeated frames, which is a noticeable stutter when films are playing.

And I would prefer to output 24.000, as that is the original film framerate, not 23.976 (23.976 only exists in NTSC regions because it fits into 59.94 with a 3:2 cadence)

After a long absence out of town, I've now revisited this problem again, trying the suggestions.

When looking at and trying to adjust Display Settings, my options are only 60-75Hz, and max resolution of 1280 x 1024.....Hmmm, this is what my "desktop monitor's" specs are!

So, I have two displays -- 1.) the desktop monitor, setup 1s Display #2, but my PRIMARY DISPLAY, and 2.) My TV, 1080p, display #1.  These are setup for Extended Desktop.

BUT, even though Theatre View and other things are setup to display on DISPLAY #1, it seems when I adjust Display Settings per this thread, I can only adjust for the PRIMARY DISPLAY.  And I do not want my TV to be the primary display!  So MC will not set the refresh / frame rate to 24p because the 19" 1280 x 1024 desktop monitor of course won't display it.  If course when using CyberDVD and I use their movie mode and play to the TV, it detects and runs 24p accordingly.  So everything WILL work correctly -- the problem is in MC.

Suggestions?

While this is a problem that should be fixed, you could try disabling MC18's display changer, and using madVR's if you are using ROHQ:

I don't use a multi-monitor setup, so I don't know if this will work, or if there's something you need to change to use MC18's refresh rate changer.
