How do I edit the columns called Album or Genre?  I tried the Rename feature, but I could only figure out how to rename the file, which is not what I want to do.  I tried going to Locate>external, and again, I could only change file names.

I am half way through the trial period and have gone from happy, to confused, to frustrated, and now to feeling really stupid.  I had a company rip 250 CDs for me, and about half came back with cover art.  I have slowly been adding art by finding the CD on Amazon and sending the image to somewhere, I have no idea where (the path says library>pictures but in Windows Explorer (Win7) I don't see any of the photos) that magically appear when I right click on the album and select Cover Art>Insert from File.

When I got the CDs back and was putting them back into their cases, I discovered I had forgotten to include the second CD in about 5 cases.  I ripped those CDs using MediaCenter, although the first one took just over an hour - a Keith Jarret CD.  Now I have one CD called Greatest Hits: John Williams... and another called John Williams: Greatest Hits.  All the tracks have the same file name, up to the last string,  but the albums display in different locations in the album view because of the different album titles.  I also would like to change the Genre, if possible.

I understand maybe 1% of the material discussed on this forum.  Perhaps I need a simpler system, although I am impressed with the sound when I can get it to work.  I use JRemote on my iPhone 4 to select most of the music and sometimes it plays only one track at a time, and I have no idea why.  I understand that is out of the scope of this forum, but I don't know who else to ask.

Try editing the tags for all the problem tracks.  The Album Name or Album Artist may be wrong on some of the tracks.

Tagging ( changing the Artist, Genre, etc. of a file) is not very intuitive in MC18.

Contrast these two things:

* After you import files, then, whether you like it or not, MC18 will change your screen to RECENTLY IMPORTED FILES (caps intentional).  (I am constantly having to backspace to get back to my work, there have entire threads as recently as MC17 to make this optional.)

* When you tag files, it opens a tiny little box in the lower left corner for you to edit hundreds or thousands of characters.

Tagging should be a big screen, since you need to enter a lot of data.

The Action Window can be quite large. 

You can drag the divider between the tree and the content pane to enlarge horizontally.

Click on the caret symbol (^) in the Action Window to enlarge vertically.

Hi there.  Let's start small.  Sometimes when folks get frustrated or overwhelmed, they try to do too many things at once.

Edit a column of selected tracks:

1. Select the tracks.
2. Press F2.
3. Enter the new value and press return.

The column that opens will be the column of the cell you last clicked on.  So, select the first track, hold down Shift and select the last track by clicking on its Genre or Album column.  Press F2.

There are other shortcuts or conveniences for editing.  They really are sublime in MC.

I was intuitively looking for something like that "F2" by just doing the same thing and double-clicking (instead of F2), which is the behavior in MP3Tag (among others).

So, I just assumed that this was not supported.

I'd really like get to the same thing that is done by F2 to be added to

Tools->Options->General->Behavior->DoubleClick

I assume that there is some concern over people accidentally changing tags, so it could be added as an option to DoubleClick (and keep the current default).

PS  The problem with dragging the divider over to make space is that I then later have to drag it back over to make space for the things on the right-half... however, the F2 method allows it to be done directly in the right-half so no problem now.

Slow double-click, or mouse Left-down-Right-click.

I can't get any speed of double-click to do it --- but I also find that mice already are somewhat variable in what they judge as single or double clicks to begin with.

The left-down-right-click does work fine, and feels more reliable.

I accidentally discovered an interesting feature.

If you are doing the F2 edit, and instead of hitting return, you press down arrow, it accepts the entry and goes down to the entry below.

So, you can quickly edit a series of entries  (in situations where they will not all be set to the same string).

I thank all of you for all the help.  If I distil everyone's responses as well as my own discoveries, I come up with the following.  I like MrC's approach of starting simple, but I need to start even simpler.  As I said before, the forum is at a level way beyond me.

To change Album, Artist, Date, Genre, Name, Playlist, Track #, do the following:
1.  Launch MediaCenter.
2.  Click on Audio in the left frame.
3.  Click on Album or Artist to view all albums, arranged by Album or by Artist.
4.  In the fight frame, click on the album you want to edit.
5.  Press Atl + Enter to open the Tags box within Action Window at the bottom of the left frame.*
6.  Edit any of the tags by clicking on the tag.
*Note: there are at least 3 ways to do this step.  You also can right click on the album cover and click on Tags, or you can click on the Action Window in the bottom of the left frame.  If the Action Window is already open, click on Tags.
