TrueHD to LPCM
« on: April 04, 2013, 01:06:51 pm »

Hi,

I've just discovered this amazing bit of software, however I am having a little problem.

My AV processor does not support Dolby TrueHD but does support DTS-HD.

Now I have no problem sending the processor a LPCM signal so I can use the softwares bass management etc.

I have installed the dtsdecoder dll file just fine, I have then played a bluray (as BDMV folder) with the software and confirmed the signal is being sent as the audio path shows dts-hd and 8 channels (when playing a 7.1 mix).

However when I play a 7.1 TrueHD file the audio path shows ac3 and 6 to 8 channel conversion, this to me indicates the signal being sent is the 640kbps dolby digital stream?

I am using the ASIO4ALL driver and have the output channels within the options set to 7.1.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

While the video file is playing hit the up or down arrows a couple of times until you see the list of possible audio tracks (if there is more than one). Perhaps MC is defaulting to an AC3 soundtrack. If you don't see a list of audio tracks in the OSD, it means there is only one.

It sounds like you are Bitstreaming (which if so you don't need dtsdecoderdll.dll) and of course you will not get the TrueHD sent).  Have a look at Tools --> Options --> Audio --> Bitstreaming and try a few options like "None" which then should decode everything to LPCM and send to your receiver or go into the Custom option and select what you want Bitstreamed Vs Decoded.

Thanks for the replys chaps.

To clarify, I am not bitstreaming :). I would rather send the LPCM signal.

Also my blurays are backed up using DVDFab, I remove all audio tracks apart from the HD stream to keep size down, I have also tried using a disc but get the same problem...

I have no idea what else to try?

Mmm can you for "fun" try these settings:
Tools --> Options --> Audio --> Bitstreaming = None
Tools --> Options --> Audio --> Bitstreaming = WASAPI - Event Style

What physical connection do you have?

I'm using HDMI.

Right I've tried that suggestion, I get a warning message that says.

Something went wrong with playback.

Details:
Playback could not be started on the selected audio output.

The ausio format may not be supported by your hardware. You can use DSP studio to change the output to a compatible format.

Also, make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options.

I should point out, this is when playing a 7.1 TrueHD file.

Ok - how about (for now) try each one of these independently.

DSP = Check the "Output Format" (to turn it on) and change the Channels to the # you have.

Output Mode Settings = Check Present 24-Bit data in 32-Bit package

Output Mode = Direct Sound

What is the source of your HDMI output?

Video card e.g. AMD/ATi or nVidia
Built in graphics e.g. Intel HD3000, HD4000
Sound card eg ASUS, Auzentech

Finally, some screen shots of your Audio output setup, DSP etc. in MC would be useful. Personally, depending on your hardware, I'd ditch the ASIO4ALL and use WASAPI Event style as a start.

I've tried the suggestions but get the same result as ASIO4ALL.

I'm using a Radeon HD5450 card.

I will try and grab some screen shots in a minute.

Ahhh it says it is an eac3 track which is DD+ not AC3 (commonly used on HD-DVDs).  Are you sure this track is TrueHD?  Can you post a Media Info shot?

By the way - once this is all working I'm going to recommend you use WASAPI as in Win7 there is no advantage using ASIO.

There are advantages to using ASIO, but not ASIO4ALL which is just kernel streaming. I don't think any receiver accepts ASIO anyway.

When you play the video, "right click on it --> streams" and what audio streams to you see?

I'm going it is a malformed mux as Media Info reads the meta data while MC when playing is reporting what the streams really are.... and in this case it seems to be a EAC3 stream not TrueHD.  You could try having a look at this file in either EAC3TO or tsMuxer....

Just to confirm, I have played the file with my Oppo BluRay player, this confirms the TrueHD stream and also the fact its a 7.1 mix. My audio processor also receives 7.1 channels.

I will upload a small sample of the file shortly.

Well - it plays correctly for me as a True HD and DD track (see Pic)!

Can you please post your direct show filter settings on the playing window "Right Click -->  DirectShow Filters --> Copy Graph Info to Clipboard" and past it here.  Mine is as follows and inparticular I'm looking to see you have Filter 'LAV Splitter (auto-configured)' and  'LAV Audio Decoder (auto-configured)' being used.

I'm really confused  :o  as I have no idea that (presume we are both playing the same sample) as the splitter is the same on both our systems yet:
- your reports an EAC3 Audio Stream (GUID : A7FB87AF-2D02-42FB-A4D4-05CD93843BDD)
- I get TrueHD (GUID : EB27CEC4-163E-4CA3-8B74-8E25F91B517E)

I'll ask nevcairiel (author of LAV Filters) to see what he thinks.

Thanks

Thanks Nathan, I appreciate it.

The only thing I was thinking, my processor does not support TrueHD but this shouldn't matter as I'm not bitstreaming?

I can confirm I have tried the new sample I made with the same results.

Works just fine for me as well.
I cannot think of any reason why this wouldn't work for you while work for us, unless you use a custom version of LAV, and not the default shipped with MC18?

Do you have any other version of LAV installed in your system?
Are you using default RO or RO HQ, not advanced mode?

Try deleting this folder (with MC closed) C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 18\Plugins\lav then play the file again (MC will re-download the correct version of LAV).

I am having trouble playing back 7.1 dtshd ma, the menu when pressing the up keys shows English dtshd ma 5.1 with no 7.1selection available. The same file plays 7.1 fine when using arcsoft player. Perhaps I have not set jriver correctly. I am moving this to new topic on MC19 thread

Any help is appreciated
