It will show for a few m4a files and all flac and wav files. 17.0.189 is what I am using.

a couple more examples. it appears bitrate appears for some songs in mp3 format.

any help, much appreciated.

Try Update Library (from tags).  If you have not been writing tags out (automatic, by default, if possible), then use Update Tags (from Library) first.

This did not help. The procedure is over in about 1 second, with a dialog box popping up, saying: Library updated for 1 files (0 failures).

Of course, one must highlight the files first  :P

This does work. However, with thousands of files, this is no small, quick matter. Guess I will need to do this in blocks, as the process bogs my system down a bit. May I expect other data to be changed in the database?

You should be able to sort the files based on bitrate and select the empty bitrate files (or use the Search Wizard to show only empty bitrate files), then run the tools.  It should take you less than 10 seconds in all, not counting the time it takes your system to write out any tags.
