Right button click = Crash
« on: March 31, 2002, 07:42:54 am »

Whenever I right button click anything within the last few builds of MJ8, I experience a crash that prompts WinXP to attempt to send an error report to Microsoft. Bringing up a file's properties within my library, attempting to play an album, etc. I have uninstalled (as per JimH), updated my video drivers, reinstalled, uninstalled other burning/playback apps, Windows Updated ad infinitum, but I still can't track this problem down, and its making my MJ unusable.

Anyone seen anything similar?

Thanks,

Julien

no, i wonder if it may have something to do with your mouse driver.

In the slight probability that *wasnt* in jest, I will now state that the problem only evidences itself within the Media Jukebox application.

Answer: No

Since I Have Not Seen Anything Like It And No One Else Has Ever Reported This.

I Would Think We May Need To Look At Your System.

Since You Said You Updated Some Of The Things In Your System You Did Not Say You Checked Out Your Mouse Driver.

It May BE A Little Of Both Your Mouse Driver Does Not Like How MJ Is Doing Something. What I Am Wondering If There Is Older Or Newer Drivers You Could Try With Your Mouse. If There Is A New Driver Maybe It Will Fix The Problem.

You Might Need To Give Them Some System And Even Your Mouse Make And Driver Info To See If Someone Else Has That Same Mouse With It Working Or Not Working.

Don't Know, But It Is Posable It Could Be The Mouse Driver. It Would Not Be The First Time A Driver Had Some Stange Effects Depending On What Program You Used It On.

You Could Also Check Your Mouse Settings In Windows To Make Sure Everything Seems Set Right.

Some Mouse Drivers Have More Settings Than Others.

Just An Idea

I updated my Logitech Mouseman Wheel drivers to the latest version of Mouseware from Logitech, I still experience the crash.

I removed all Logitech software from my machine, so the mouse is recognized as an MS PS2 Mouse, I still experience the crash.

Here is my system info as MJ reports it:

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.237

CPU: Intel Pentium III 731 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 261 MB, Free - 109 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP 5.1  (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2600.0000
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
wnaspi32.dll: 2.0.1.41 , Nero Aspi Library, Copyright © 1999-2001 Ahead Software AG
Aspi32.sys: 4.60 (1021)

I am able to left button click and keyboard navigate around the MJ user interface and media library, but any right button click produces one of these:

Interesting.

Just wondering if it would be possable if you had another mouse you could try, and if it would work.

Like i said never heard of this problem, sorry

No need to apologize, you are trying to help!

I have now experimented with three other pointing devices, a Kensington trackball, a Wacom pen, and a Wacom 4D (whatever the hell that means) mouse, all with the same results.

If anyone else wants to toss their two cents in, I'd be glad to try anything at this point.

Thanks

the only other thing i could think of is:

1. Hardware Conflict (IRQ)
2. Conflict With A Programable Keyboard

I know sometimes it will say analyzing something when right clicking in the last few builds. Most likely that.

I also have the logitech mouseman w/ wheel optical wireless mouse and it works just fine in Xp.

Device Manager is reporting no conflicts, so thats looking fine. I have no programmable keyboard(s) so thats not an issue either.

I have noticed that the crashes often happen right after/during the 'analyzing devices' pop up. Is there any way to turn that behavior off? I'm not even sure what it's doing, so I'm not sure where to look.

FWIW, Although I have no crash with a right-click, it takes me *two* right-clicks to bring up the context menu. The first one results in a quick flash of a menu (something loading perhaps), and the second one actually brings up the menu.  Maybe related in some way to your difficulty, although again, I don't have it crash. Using 8.0.237 w/XP Pro, Intellimouse Explorer.

Same here. It's been doing that for a few builds now.

Julien> Does the same thing happen when you use the application key on your keyboard? It's the one to the left of the right control key.

Try going into the CD Burner Options and tell it to analyze your CD Burner if possible (even if you don't have one). Also, what happens when you click on the CD-ROM letter under Devices? If the same thing doesn't happen there... well...

Possibly a video driver problem?

Hey, I've been batteling a problem like this one with John T for a while now, and it's not mouse drivers or some such stuff.

In my case the Generic burner drivers are not compatible with my NT system and cause BSOD.  XP folks are reporting similar problems that don't result in BSOD, but do crash MJ.

The reason that it smells like my problem is that the Generic drivers are invoked where you can r.click and SendTo Burner.

A diagnostic of this would be to click on BurnCD and see if you get a similar error.

Acutally KingS, many folks have reported something like this, for instance:
http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/interact/NeoBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=inter&Post=8938&BoardIdle=7&SortingBy=0&BoardOrder=Descend&Page=0&UserSession=

The good news is that the good folks at JRiver know about this and are working on it.

Doof - Application button causes the crash, as does the CD Burner analyzing and selecting the burner under devices.

Although I am able to use this device under Nero and other applications, I'm going to uninstall it entirely and see if that has any (positive) effect.

Thanks,

hvy duty - I have uninstalled and reinstalled while saving only the library, it has no effect.

I have also removed my cd writer from the system entirely, and MJ still crashes with a right button click, expanding the "Devices" tree, or accessing the CD Writer section from "Settings | Options".

Anyone from JRiver want to chime in?

Looks like I'm not crazy! Well, on this count at least.

Looks like we have the Logitech mouse in common, but I still get the crashes even with Mouseware uninstalled.
