Pre-purchase questions about JRiver capabilities
« on: April 18, 2013, 09:45:28 am »

I'm currently seeking for a software solution to my multiseat htpc setup and JRiver seems to be one of the best solutions out there.

However, because of the lack of an official manual, it is diffult to determine if jriver will provide certain features that i'm looking for, and that's why i'm posting this message here.

I will appreciate if any of you could let me know if any of the following features are available in the latest version of JRiver:

1-Integration with NETFLIX & PANDORA. (I'm concerned about a comment that i read about netflix stopping their API's support for non-approved suppliers and i haven't heard anything about jriver supporting pandora)

2-With the search functions in netflix, hulu, lastFM, youtube, etc..., do i need a keyboard or does jriver supports pressing the same remote key up to 3 times to type something (similar to the text messages in older phones from 5 years ago)

3-PLAYON Client

4-Emulators plugin

5- FM Radio support

6- Automatic Wake On Lan (WOL) for the main HTPC (server) when a client HTPC tries to reach for a recorded tv show or when reaching the EPG that is managed by the Main HTPC.

7- Manage the shared media database from either the Main or the client HTPC.

8-Information about integration with mymovies software. I'm a current mymovies user and, as far as i know, it can provide metadata that can be used by jriver. Besides metadata, can i manage my jriver database from within mymovies or this function is limited to metadata?

9-How does JRiver handles the multidiscs tittles, like special versions of movies or for workout DVDs like P90x? (I currently have these tittles set up in mymovies. Please refer to item #8)

10-Cablecard support. I know about the compatibility with Ceton cards but what about hdhomern prime?

11-Compatibility with hdhomerun dual for Over The Air (OTA) TV signals.

12-Minimum requirements for Red October HQ. I currently have an i3-3225 (HD4000 igpu), with no plans on installing a dedicated video card, and 8 GB of ram. Will this be enough?

13-Does JRIver uses MadVR for playing LiveTV, DVDs and BluRay?

14-When playing a bluray, would i get the "soap opera" effect similar to how TotalMedia Theater 5 works (that's how i call it but i think it has to do with the 120 hz refresh rate that my tv supports)

15-When no media is being played, can jriver use a pictures slideshow as a screensaver (similar to WMC)?

As you can see, i have quite a lot of question and this seems to be the proper place to find answers.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

If you haven't already. you can download a 30 day, fully-functional trial of JRiver for free. That might help in your evaluation.

I appreciate your response but i already tried it when it was on version 17.

To be honest, back then i spend too much time trying make it work with the setup that i had and got frustrated. But life happens and now i just don't have the time to try all the software packages that are available out there. Specially if it is to find out if the software has or not the features that i'm looking for.

Don't get me wrong, i'm willing to spend time setting my system properly (i even bougth access to the assasin tutorials since he is the only one explaining something about setting up jriver), i just can't afford the luxury of wasting more time "testin" a software when i could be "setting up" the system.

I don't think we can help if you're unwilling to try it.  MC won't satisfy all your needs.
