new static on MC18 with ASIO
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:56:45 am »

I use a laptop for music and video playback.  I have MC18, an Audioengine DAC and speakers and have used  the ASIO4ALL driver with only minor issues (occasional very loud static at beginning of playback).

I was traveling with the laptop and returned home yesterday.  I started up MC18 and played an album as usual.

There is now a weak random but constant static sound anytime I play Audio through MC18.  It's not blaring solid static, but is about half the volume of the music.

I played the same files with WMP and found it trouble free.

I then changed the audio driver in MC18 from ASIO4ALL to direct and found it to work static free.
I upgraded the ASIO driver to the latest (2.11 beta 2) but received static again.

I have rebooted and toyed with ASIO buffers and MC18 ASIO options with no change....I am now in Direct Mode for the time being.

This is a new issue with no intentional changes to the system I can think of.

Anyone else experience this?  Any thoughts?

Thanks,

ASIO4ALL is not recommended.

Our advice is here:

Thanks for the pointer.  I think I went through that selection process when I first got my DAC last year.

So the article suggests ASIO if you have native support.  I may not have that with the Audioengine D1.  Then next best seems to be WASAPI.  Then kernel streaming.  Then non-direct modes.

I am hearing the static with the WASAPI exclusive and Kernel streaming also.

Have I lost Direct Connection audio?  Could this be a hardware problem I wonder?  I have used ASIO for a year or more without seeing this.

Any other thoughts as to isolating the cause?

Set WASAPI, then uncheck "Disable Event Style".  Buffer size may matter.

Jim:

Thanks, but I still get the same result.

I found that the static is only on the left channel, and only when using these direct connections...I may need to look at my USB DAC for hw malfunction.

Back to Direct Sound for now...
