FPS Help
« on: April 20, 2013, 09:22:56 pm »

Playing a new series and the fps is 29.97 and is very jumpy.

Playing an old one at fps 23.98 is ok

Can someone explain to me how to use the frame rate settings in jriver.

Where do I start? which do I set to the LCD TV screen or the computer?

I am sorry but this one is very confusing to me.

This is possibly an IVTC issue. If you are using Red October HQ (madVR) try renaming the file and adding deint=film to the filename.
Or hitting CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+T a couple of times while it is playing to activate film mode.

This will force madVR into film mode and it should detect a 3:2 cadence if that is the cause.

Unfortunately, Media Center’s display mode switcher does not switch to 24Hz when IVTC is activated—you need to use madVR’s switcher for that—at least until it’s fixed.

Well I assumed that you already had it enabled, if you are finding 1080p24 playback smooth.

If your display doesn't support 24Hz, then it should at least look as smooth as native 24p content does, and you may also want to turn on madVR's "smooth motion" option if it's not already enabled.

Thank you for your help.

Where is madVR's "smooth motion?

my nvidia 9500gt card has 1920 x 1080i native set at 25hz or 1920 x 1080p  any hz I like which should I be using?

Can you tell me what I should set the frame rate at in the auto function?

If your display supports 1080p, you should not send it a 1080i signal.
You say that your display supports 1080p at "any hz" which isn't very helpful as many displays only support some refresh rates.
Ideally your display will support 1080p at 23/24Hz, 50Hz, and 59/60Hz. Some older displays won't support 23/24Hz, and some US (NTSC) sets won't have 50Hz support.

With the madVR switcher, you set these with comma-separated values - you only need one from 23/24, and 59/60, not both. (I prefer 24 & 60 if they are supported)

Set up this way, madVR will switch to the most appropriate refresh rate for the content being displayed - 24Hz for 24fps content, 50Hz for 50fps content, and 60Hz for 30/60fps content.
The key difference between madVR's switcher and Media Center's switcher, is that with IVTC content (PAL film content, or 3:2 NTSC content - which it sounds like your problematic 29fps file is) madVR will switch to 24Hz rather than 50/60Hz.

Note: the "treat 25p movies as 24p (requires Reclock)" option also works with Media Center's own "Video Clock" feature.

If your display supports 23/24Hz and 50Hz natively you should not use Smooth Motion - it is for displays which don't support 23/24Hz or 50Hz.

I don't know if your system will be fast enough to handle madVR properly though. This topic should help you tune madVR's performance to hopefully achieve smooth playback.

Hello and thank you for your time.

I think I am confusing Nvidia settings with tv refresh rates.

I have set Nvidia display to 1920 x1080p at 60hz it does however have 1920 x 1080i at 25hz which it calls native.

My Tv is a 42" Toshiba and I am not sure where to look for the refresh rates on that.

Where do I look for the Madvr settings on the pc?

I am not sure why it thinks 1080i is the native resolution for the display if it supports 1080p. Perhaps someone made an error with the EDID on that model.

The Nvidia control panel will list supported refresh rates here:

If you are using Red October HQ under Tools > Options > Video, you should be able to right-click a video when it is playing and access it from the DirectShow Filters list.

Mine definitely says 1080i is native but I have set to 1080p at 60hz

Film 23.976 23hz
Film 24 24hz
NTSC 29.97/59.94 59hz
pal 25/50 50hz

I have taken off hardware accelerate

Screen flashes when going back to desktop default

looking into MADVR I see a question mark on my Toshiba TV under the identification

are theses settings correct.

Film 24 24hz
NTSC 29.97/59.94 59hz
pal 25/50 50hz
If your display supports these refresh rates (i.e. the Nvidia control panel lists them, and they work when you try them) the settings are good - but as I said, you will still need to enable the madVR switcher as the Media Center one does not change to the correct refresh rates with IVTC content - and it sounds like this problematic 29fps file is IVTC'ed. (which means it is really a 23fps file in a 29fps container)

Screen flashes when going back to desktop default
Refresh rate changes usually do black out the screen for a second - it sounds like you were just playing back everything at 60Hz before, which can introduce judder.

looking into MADVR I see a question mark on my Toshiba TV under the identification
That just means you haven't set a display type - it's nothing to worry about. (that doesn't do anything but change the icon)

I think I may have set something wrong as after setting the display mde when clicking on a tv show it did not go black but flashed up the desktop.

When will madvr be fixed as some of these settings are too hard for a novice.

I tried changing the file name as you explained earlier but that did not help.

As far as I know, only madVR will do IVTC with decimation to play back 3:2 content at 24p - Red October Standard won't.

I'm not sure why madVR isn't working for you - I used to have it working on a 9400M years ago. Are you running the latest version of Media Center (18.0.171) and are your video drivers up to date? (314.22)

I have been thinking of writing a guide to madVR setup for a while now. Perhaps I will get started on it now. (it will take a while though)

what is IVTC and why is my screen flickering so much. I have not done all the settings on MADVR as it is much too complicated.

I love MC as it is mostly automated until I get probs like this one

Re: FPS Help
« Reply #14 on: April 23, 2013, 01:21:40 am »

what is IVTC
IVTC is inverse telecine, which is the process of extracting 23.976fps video from a 29.97fps file.
Sometimes 29.97fps video is just 29.97fps content, but when you say that one series was 23.976fps, and the next is 29.97fps which isn't playing smoothly, it is very likely to be telecined content.

madVR is the only thing I know of that will handle IVTC decimation correctly. (extracting the 23fps video from a 29fps file)

why is my screen flickering so much
It should flicker once at the start of video playback when it switches from 60Hz on the desktop to 23Hz when playing back video, and again when you stop.

Can you confirm that the refresh rates you have selected actually work by setting them in the Nvidia control panel before you set them in Media Center?

When you switch refresh rate, you should have a box like this appear:

If you don't see it, or you get an error displayed on your screen, then your display doesn't support that refresh rate.

If you want to avoid changing refresh rate, you could just play back everything at 60Hz with Smooth Motion enabled to avoid that, but video will not play as smoothly as it would when displayed at its native refresh rate. (23fps files at 23Hz for example)

I love MC as it is mostly automated until I get probs like this one
Unfortunately video is difficult because there are so many formats, and quirks with how things are handled. Once you actually get madVR set up and running well, it should be mostly automated again.

DO you mean from the [fps] field? You could select the affected files in standard view and do library tools> update library from tags.

That's strange. Are you sure you didn't choose "update tags from library" by mistake? The only times I've ever had this fail is if the video files are corrupted or incomplete. If you have MPC-HC you can ry playing them in that program and look in the lower left of the window to see whether "buffering" comes up before playback starts.

It would probably be helpful to post details on the file (what type it is etc.) and upload a sample if you can.

Were these videos ever unrar'd. This type of thing often happens when there is a glitch during unrar'ing.

I wish I understood all this frame rate thing.

So far managed to set Nvidia ti 1920x1080p 60hz even tho it say 1080i is native.

TV show with 29.97 is improved after setting display changing although our screen flashes weird like one black then the desktop then the show starts.

I have not played with madvr as I dont understand what to set if we have 720p movies.

Sorry if this sounds weird but I am not technical I just follow instruction.

Your graphics card doesn't know what your display's native resolution is - that information is often wrong. It's either guessing (incorrectly) or the TV is reporting its native resolution incorrectly via EDID.

Either way, it doesn't matter, or mean anything. If your TV is the 42xv500a listed in your signature, a search seems to indicate that it has a 1920x1080 panel (which means it's 1080p) and from your accounts, it does accept a 1080p signal - so it is actually 1080p native and not 1080i.
I don't know what is causing the driver to report 1080i as being "native" but that is clearly wrong.

I also can't figure out why you are seeing the desktop when it's switching refresh rate. The screen should black out for a second and then the video should start playing.
What resolution do you normally have the desktop set to? Is it set to 1920x1080 at 60Hz?

This should hopefully cover every setting.

How is playback with everything set up like this. (which should mostly be the defaults, but I've posted everything just in case something has changed in your setup)

I've sometimes seen my desktop shortly before a movie started, or better said before its switching to full screen display view.

I'm guessing having a relatively older machine (c2d) with 2gb memory might cause it to show more often? Either way, I don't think it means anything.

I have enabled auto switching and done all the config.

Still is not smooth.  ?

my  29.7 files are better but still jump.

How can I tell if its playing with the settings I have entered.

When it looks jumpy can you press CTRL-J to bring up Madvr stats and look at the refresh rate (top) and a bit further down where it says movie fps and give us the numbers shown there.

Also look at the dropped, repeated or presentation glitches. Are any of those increasing?

Crt-J does not bring up Madvr.
Try pressing Ctrl-J whilst the MadVR settings window is visible.

Why don't you upload a sample somewhere. We can have a look at it.

With all respect but maybe you should consider using RO Standard.

Good suggestion. My eyes do not see any difference between RO Standard and HQ.

I found this to be the easiest way to split a file. It breaks it down into three segments, with the middle one being the part you want.

I have never used this program before, please suggest time frames to input under the split by parts

I am so sick of changing settings on something that is supposed to be Automatic.

I dont know where to start to go back, do I use Standard RO do I even bother to use Auto display switching.

Sorry but its pretty disappointing to get files that just dont work.

A 30 second sample from a point that is showing this problem is probably enough. Maybe 60 seconds. You then want to zip it up and upload it to a free file host.

What is the source for this? It's difficult to diagnose anything without samples.
