I am planning to continue my exploration of how well MC 18 can handle ripped Blu-rays and DVDs (and audio FLAC files) by connecting my PC to an Oppo BDP-95 universal disc player, which contains good quality DAC hardware. This would be an HDMI connection using a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor, as my PC graphics card has DisplayPort outputs. The Oppo would drive my television via HDMI and would connect to my stereo system via its stereo audio output.

Would the sound quality via HDMI be any different to that available if I were to connect my PC to a DAC via asynch USB and use this to feed my stereo system (assuming this external DAC was of a similar quality to the Oppo DAC)? In other words, does asynch USB have any intrinsic benefits over HDMI?
