Failed to build digital preview graph
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:53:24 pm »

Hi JRiver,

When I start a Scan Channels in the Television part within MC, I get an error:

Scanning failed. Details: Failed to build digital preview graph.

I use a dual dvb-c tuner from Digital Devices. On top of that I use Dvblink from Dvblogic.
I get this error when scanning on both virtual Dvblink devices and physical devices.

Any idea?

Thanks,
Peter

What device do you have?  Does it have bda driver?  If the tuner device does not support bda, then it will not work in MC.

First, let me start by saying that MC was working great then it wasn't.  I am using the Hauppauge HVR-2250 with Windows 7-64. I use an OTA antenna for TV reception. The error I started to receive was TSRenderStreamsToWriter error with failed to build upper stream graph and no combination of intermediate filters could be found to make connection. I have deleted or inactivated all other audio/video software and cleaned the registry. I have reloaded the 2250 software and per their website I'm using the most up to date driver. I have redownloaded the MC software. When I scan for digital I get "failed to build digital preview graph". When i try to configure for the analog I get the message,"failed to render video stream". I have tried to restore the library which only gets me back to the TSRenderStreamsToWriter error.

Yours is a different problem from the original poster.  You are using the analog tuner to play an analog OTA channel.  The log shows that your device's hardware decoder filter failed to connect.  It looks like a driver issue.  Please try reinstalling the driver.  If the latest driver does not work, you should try rolling back to a previous version of driver.

EDIT: I also see you attempting to play an ATSC channel.  The log shows that it also failed.  The tuner filter would not connect.  There definitely is a problem with your system.

Sent this email with a log file to Yaobing:

Hopefully you can help with this DVB-T channel scan failure. Error message here:
Details: Failed to build digital preview graph.

I ran a log process and have attached it for your reference.

As background, I've just completed a ground up rebuild of my HTPC. I replaced the old motherboard with an Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe to take advantage of  Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) software. The PC is installed with an SSD to cache the main HDD.

Prior to this I had MC18 Build 126 working fine on a simple configuration where the SSD and HDD were running separately without IRST acceleration. When I started to have problems, I rolled back from Build 126 to Build 106 given that 106 is the "stable" version that MC18 recognises.

Are you aware of IRST functionality causing conflict's with MC's ability to deal with TV integration?

Thanks for your help.

For additional info, I've got 2 HDHomeRun dual network tuners loaded with the 20130117 firmware version. It's configured to work with MC and it scans and plays using VLC as a preview software without a problem.

Thoughts anyone?    ?

Here are a few things for you to try:

1. Make sure you set your firewall so it allows Media Center network access.
2. Run HDHomerun's HDHomerun Setup program.  On Application tab, choose "J River Media Center" for Main Application.  If that does not work, choose "Other: DVB-T/DVB-C".

Thanks Yaobing.

The blow by blow set out below but no cigar.

1. HDHomerun Setup = Application > Main Application > "J River Media Center" was already configured.
2. Firewall already set to permit "Media Center xx" (xx = Version No) but I extended access to "JRService", "JRWeb" & "JRWorker" as they were missing. Should there be anything else on the access list?
2. Rebooted the PC.
3. Launched MC18 & ran channel scan ==> Failed to build digital preview graph
4. Exited from MC18
5. Reconfigured HDHomerun Setup = Application > Main Application > "Other: DVB-T/DVB-C"
6. Launched MC18 & ran channel scan ==> Failed to build digital preview graph
7. Exited from MC18
8. Just in case, I reconfigured HDHomerun Setup = Application > Main Application > "J River Media Center"
9. Launched MC18 & ran channel scan ==> Failed to build digital preview graph

Do you need another log file for the above?

For info, I've got a laptop setup with MC18 Build 126 and it is able to scan TV channels over a WiFi connection and successfully display a TV signal. MC18 was not loaded on the laptop when the above process was worked through.

Your log shows that MC could not load the tuner device.  The returned error code is 0x80040154 which normally means "class not registered".  Maybe you did not install the driver correctly.  Please try re-download the installation file from SilliconDust and reinstall it.

Yaobing

Thanks again for your input.

I've installed and uninstalled the driver software multiple times but will give it another go. Today, I reinstalled the latest release dated 20130117 with the firewall switched off, just in case it was affecting the install. No change unfortunately ..   :'(

On a separate note, I recently raised a troubleshooting ticket with the Motherboard supplier because it won't do a warm reboot / restart. The machine freezes at the first start up screen. I've tried the recommended fix of loading the latest BIOS and resetting the CMOS but this hasn't helped. The supplier, has told me that in this situation the motherboard is an RMA item.

It makes sense to me to work from the ground up and sort out the hardware issue first. I'd like to rule it out as a potential source of conflict. I don't know why it would be a problem for just MC (everything else on the HTPC appears to work fine) but computers being what they are, anything is possible.

I'll go quiet on this one and will report back once the MoBo return is sorted out, which will probably take a few weeks to address (dag nab it!)   >:(

Hopefully when I log in about this next time, it's with some happy news.

Thanks

DVBViewer works without problems.
When disabling the CI on the DigitalDevices Tuner, MC can scan for channels, so the problem is related to the CI.

Any help?

Yes, the selected tuner is correct. With the same tuner does the channel scan when the CI is deactivated.
