Revisiting Photos: Faces
« on: May 25, 2013, 05:42:47 am »

So I'm revisiting my photos. I like Picasa's facetagging feature. But I prefer MC's organisational and tagging capacity.

Picasa now stores Face data in the photo as embedded XMP. Any chance we might get MC to read this data? I'm not that fussed about MC recognising the 'face rectangle' (although that would be sweet). But at least pulling the names and populating the people field would be grand.

MC can read this XMP data:

But can't make use of it.

Here's a pic of the same photo in picasa.

Please send a couple face-tagged sample photos to logs (at) jriver dot com.

Thanks.

Adam, with a little help, added this to last night's build.

Testing and feedback appreciated.

This works really well.

If I import new photos (which have been tagged with Picasa) into MC, it accurately populates the people field.
For photos which were already in MC, I can update the people field by using the "update library from tags" function.

Both have worked perfectly on a test album of a few hundred photos.

Thanks so much guys!

Internally, if I edit the people field in MC, how are things handled? Will it write back to the XMP tag, or store it separately? If so, which tag takes precedence?

When you "update tags from library" after editing the people field in MC it will add those people to a separate section as an MJMD Tag.  The original XMP tags are not altered.

Appreciate the feedback.

Is it possible to force MC to change the XMP tag so that other programs can also read changes to people?
I personally manage my images with Microsoft Photo Gallery, and PG use also the XMP tag for people.

Holy Cow! How did I miss this addition. I've wanted this for ages. I used to do a manual method to import these, but it was too cumbersome so I stopped. I can go back to picassa again it seems.

Thanks JR....

Forcing Media Center to change Picasa "People" tags unfortunately wouldn't work, as they tag that along with the position of the face.  I'm not sure how Microsoft Photo Gallery tags, but I can look into it.

Another photo update thread for me :)

I'm noticing MC does not update people field to reflect changes to people made in Picasa. If MC has people tagged in its database for a photo, and I add or change the name of the people tags in Picasa, MC will not pick up these changes on auto-import or on update library from tags.

It will, however, pick up new people tags from Picasa if the people field is empty in MC.

Unfortunately this, along with the dates issues, is another showstopper for using MC for photos in my permanent workflow - I really want to! ;D

Why not move this to the main stream?

The more people who know about MC's image functionality, the greater the user base and with that comes momentum for change.

I can't move threads but I can't see why this one shouldn't be out there. What's so hush-hush?   8)

I can't reproduce this.  I tagged some faces in Picasa and imported the photos into MC.  The "people" field was filled correctly.  I then went back into Picasa and added some more faces.  When I updated the library from tags in MC, the people field reflected those changes.  I'm using Picasa 3 if that makes any difference.

One thing to note is that it seems Picasa's default settings have changed since I last used it.  Instead of saving the name tags in the photo by default like it used to, it now saves them in a separate hidden .ini file next to the photo.  This can be changed in settings, but it threw me off for a while.  Not sure if it applies to you.

Let me know if I'm reproducing this incorrectly.

Thanks Adam! I'll have a look at Picasas settings next time I'm at home. Hopefully that's the issue!
