MC18 Theater View Cover Flow missing
« on: June 19, 2013, 08:43:20 pm »

Ok, so I fired up MC18 today and I have it on auto-update so it went and got 18.201. When I went into Theater view to watch a movie, none of the overs show up. I can see the movie title at the bottom of the window, but the 3d covers don't show up. If I choose "Toggle List View" a few times I can get the Grid layout to show up and the details (small thumbnails) view to work, but the other three "3D" style views don't work.

I use a library server, and another machine has no problem showing these.

I downgraded to MC 18.195 and the problem remains.

To my knowledge, nothing has changed on my system. Suggestions welcome!

Does it work if you revert to 193 or older?

There was a change in 194 that may have caused this: "Changed: Revised the presentation system used by Theater View on Windows 7 and Windows 8 to be more efficient (also fixes a Windows 8 dead-lock with regards to child windows intersecting with windowed 3d windows)."

It might be helpful to know what version of windows you're using, and what graphics card you have. You might also want to try updating your graphics drivers, if you haven't recently.

EDIT: TL;DR

18.194 works fine. 18.195 and up does not work on my XP SP3 machines. Windows 7 machines are fine.

Another update:  This also affects 3D visualizations on XP - no covers when playing music using the 3d visualizations, and MC crashes hard after 10 secs of the visualization running.

Ok, here's updates.

OS: Windows XP SP3
Card: NVidia 9400   (This is a Mac Mini)
Build 18.194 worked fine. Build 18.201 and 18.205 do not.

I see no video covers in Theater view, but if I toggle the list style a few times I can get the grid view to show up, but my settings are not saved, so when I go back, the view is reset back to the "cover flow" view again.

I reverted my video drivers back to 266.58, reinstalled 18.194 and the covers returned.

I moved back to jriver 18.205 and the covers were gone. So I don't think it's the video driver. To prove it, I left 18.194 installed, upgraded the video drivers, and covers appeared in 18.104. Upgrading to 18.201 or 18.205 makes them disappear.

So I think there's a bug. Next steps?

We were able to reproduce this on XP.  We'll look into it.

And this is why I have no problem opening my wallet for any products JRiver has to offer. :)

Thank you!

This should be fixed next build.

The DirectX debug tools recommended we use (D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC | D3DUSAGE_WRITEONLY) for our index and vertex buffers.  I thought "ok, I'll take the advice."  It seemed to work fine on my computer.

But it looks like XP doesn't like it.

I don't think we're using enough meshes for things like this to really matter, so we'll just revert the change.

Thanks for your help solving it.

@Matt

Awesome. I feel bad being "that guy on XP" still, but my stripped down install of XP runs really fast on my media center so I've not upgraded to another version. It's awesome to see you guys still supporting XP yet though. :)
