Search is not looking in all fields - please help
« on: July 31, 2013, 05:49:12 am »

Hello Folks, I always seem to have difficulty using the Search box [top right]

I have recently moved large amounts of text from the Comments field - coz it doesn't display clearly, to the Description field which is easier to read.

This means that Search is now no longer finding the Keywords in the Description field, whereas it worked fine when text was in Comments field.

How can I persuade Search to do a proper search.
If you are going to tell me to use the wizard then spell it out very slowly coz I cannot understand anything about how the search wizard behaves.
Thanks,

Not all fields are searchable, but you can change the setting for a field.  It's in the same section where you add a custom field/tag.

Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Manage Library Fields.

Find "Description" in the list on the left, select it, then look for the "Default Search Field" check box in the lower right. Mine is selected already, though I cannot remember if that is a default setting or a change I made a long time ago.

The "Search Keywords" field allows you to add a short text pointer, which I'll explain below:

In the search field in the top right of the program, you can just enter some plain text, and MC will search. It will include all fields that have that "Default Search Field" setting checked.
If you wanted to only search in the Description field, you would type: [description]=search
If you added a search keyword to the field properties, lets say you chose, desc, then instead of typing the string above, you could type desc=search and get the same results.

I have things such as:
[filename (name)] - fnn
[filename (path)]  -fnp
[album artist (auto)] - aaa

aaa=bob is a lot easier to type than [album artist (auto)]=bob, you see?

Hmm, with Description set as a default search field, I'm seeing the same as MusicBringer. MC does not appear to be using it.

Thanks for the helpful replies.
Yes my Default Search Field is set correctly; with a tick.
JimH, how can I persuade MC Search to use Description and do a proper search.

I think when Matt changed MC to search all stock fields by default, this affected Large type items such as Description, and the Default Search Field is no longer used for default fields.  Hence the need to use the longer, more strict form of search.

I think this area of the UI should be cleaned up.  The checkbox should be greyed-out when appropriate (such as for all default fields), and probably only active for User fields now.

So now that I have moved much of my Comments data to "Large type items such as Description" I am stuffed. Grrhh.

Give it a little time.  It's easy to move a field's contents to another field, worst case.
