88.2khz 24bit flac file wouldn't play [solved]
« on: July 05, 2013, 05:12:49 am »

I posted this in the Media Center 18.0206 update forum section.

I picked up that a 88.2khz 24bit flac file wouldn't play using the WASAPI output, it wants to downscale it to 48khz. However, it does play normally when I use the Direct Sound option. I don't know if this is a bug. But all the other formats up to 192khz plays correctly using the WASAPI method. Would it be my hardware, or is it a bug? Has anybody else found this to be a problem?

Thanks!

If you set DS to 88.2 in the Win sound panel, does it play?
I'm asking this because there has been some issues with 88 in Win.

Not sure if I understand you there?? ? However, I saw in the windows sound panel under advanced options that I do not have an 88.2 option there. I have 16 and 24 bit and under each 44.1, 48, 96 and 192.

Does that mean my sound card does not support 88.2. I generally thought that since it goes up to 192, that it would support everything below 192.

A number of devices lack support for 88.2 and 176.4 for some reason, even if they support other sample rates up to 192kHz.

Okay. It is anyway my laptop built in speakers/sound. It great that I know this. When I finally build a proper HTPC, I'll be sure check this when I get my Soundcard. Or maybe leave the soundcard as onboard and get a proper DAC.

Thanks for responding guys!

It is likely a hardware issue, as mentioned above. I have an ODAC (Technically an EDAC since I bought it from Epiphany Acoustics), which has support for 44.1Khz, 48Khz and 96Khz files, whereas 88.2Khz and 176.4Khz do not work without downsampling.

In these cases, it would be a trivial downsample to 44.1Khz (divide by 2 and divide by 4 respectively), which is a much easier calculation to make than to go from 88.2Khz to 48Khz.

Personally, I couldn't tell the difference whether downsampling to 44.1Khz or 48Khz from 88.2Khz, but if you think you might, then go for 44.1Khz. If you can hear tones above 21Khz you have amazing ears anyway.
