OT: DVD Audio vs SACD?
« on: March 19, 2002, 09:11:14 am »

Hi - does anyone have experience of either (or both) the DVD Audio or SACD formats?

I would appreciate any feedback regarding the quality / sound performance etc.

Also, it seems to me like the two formats are going to clash like VHS and Betamax and at the moment I can't see a winner. If anyone has any insights please share them....

Don't know about the quality issue, but I think the format part will not be a problem. I had seen something the other day on tv about a multi-compatible player. I believe it was Pioneer or Panasonic. Would play all the formats CD-DVD-SACD-DVD AUDIO. I only caught the last couple of minutes so I may be wrong.

Machinehead / zevele10 - thanks for responding.

I've not seen a player that will do both DVD Audio and SACD. I'll have to check around - a player that covers both bases would be the best play $'s permitting.

I saw the EMI announcement. At the moment there are 150 SACD titles and around 120 DVD Audio.

One way to place my bet would be the first format to come out with Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in 5.1....

Machinehead - thanks for the link! The whole article is well written and presents the current (confused) situation well I think.

Overall, it still seems awfully murky out there. There's only 1 unit (by Apex??) that will read DVD-A and SACD discs. I'm sure other units will appear in the next year but with different manufacturers having a vested interest in one or other format it's hard to see who will produce these.

Until there is less risk for the consumer, and more benefit too by more titles becoming available (I'm not sure I'd want a very high fidelity, multi-channel version of the Bangles Greatest Hits - don't get me wrong, they were a fine band but they're not the first people I think of when wanting to test out my new audio hardware) in moving to 5.1 channel audio it's hard to see either format really taking off.

Also, the legal limitations placed on manufacturers who implement either of the two formats to only allow 6 channel analog output seems rediculous to me. We've dicussed RIAA enough in this forum.

It's just as well that the whole consumer electronics field in the US doesn't appear to be suffering the recession like so many other fields. There are lot's of $'s to go around I suppose.

Luckily I don't need to replace my trusty Panasonic DVD player at the moment (waiting for budgetary approval to switch to HDTV, then I'll need a progressive scan DVD-V player). I guess I'll keep my $'s in my pocket and keep an eye on the market.

There are some other considerations as well. Cost of these discs' are going to be well above what you are now paying for a standard cd. Rumors...$ 25.00 and up.

Machinehead - true.

$25 for some CD's in 5.1 channels is (to me) acceptable - depends on the CD. Some classical (I'm not a great classical music listener but there are some pieces I would buy) and anything Floyd for example.

Machinehead - I was browsing Amazon.com and Machine Head by Deep Purple is one of the disks available in DVD-A. Aren't you curious?

OK.OK. You got me on that one. Next Page  Next would be trying to get it past the CFO, kind of like stirring up a hornets nest. She thinks I have to many toys as it is. I'd probably have to make a new armoire or something to even things out. Next Page

Ha!

The CFO! I have one of those too. The trouble is, for most of the time they make a lot of sense....

Considering the absolute crap that these folks have and plan to put us through (in the guise of the RIAA) and the way they shut out a legitimate, straightforward and non-threatening alternate music service (Music01, in case you didn't guess) WHO HAD THE AUDACITY TO ASK instead of just doing it, my vote (as if I had one) would go AGAINST whatever these guys were for.

As Gollum said, "We hates 'em forever."
