How does update for external changes work exactly?
« on: August 16, 2013, 08:54:10 am »

I always thought this was a little vague, so I wonder what it does exactly. When it says x files updated for external changes, what does that mean?

If, for example I edit tags with another program or from another computer. The date modified gets updated. When MC runs an auto-import (or when its set to watch the folder), will it (or should it?) pickup the changes in those tags?

Thanks!

If the last modified time on disk doesn't match what MC has in the library, it knows that something must have changed the file.

In this case, it effectively does a Library Tools > Update Library (from tags) on these files.

Thankfully, it works really well, especially when I've updated the shooting time on some photos using a third party program ;)

Yes, works perfectly with one possible exception.

If file is detected as changed then any fields normally filled on import that are null are filled. Filled fields are unchanged. I think all fields should remain unchanged. In my case if a field is null it is intentional and I have to remember to empty the field after MC refills it on change.
