I have the TEAC UD-501.  In the Audio Device settings, should I use "TEAC ASIO USB DRIVER [ASIO]" or "TEAC UD-501 (TEAC USB AUDIO DEVICE] [WASAPI]" ?  
And what should the buffer size be?  With ASIO, I am able to set the buffer to "Minimum hardware size" without the sound skipping/stuttering, but with WASAPI using low setting results in no sound.  (I assume lower buffer size is better?)

If your device has a native ASIO driver, then thats usually your best option.

According to the UD-501 product page (http://www.teac.com/product/ud-501/overview/):
"It connects to your computer over USB using ASIO 2.1 or DoP"
"Supports DSD native playback by ASIO2.1 or Doand
"Exclusive driver software for Windows"or Windows"

Does that mean it has native ASIO support even for PCM audio?  How can I be sure?

Hmm...I also just recently purchased the UD-501 - and I do not see these multiple choices.

In Audio Device within MC v18 - I only see a single choice of TEAC USB AUDIO DEVICE.

Maybe it's the way v19 displays the different driver models?

What OS are you running and what Teac drivers did you install?

JRiver 19 displays the devices differently, where all the modes (ASIO, WASAPI, etc.) are listed in one drop-down list.  On version 18, if you first select ASIO in the "Output mode" and then go into "Output mode setting" you will see "TEAC ASIO USB DRIVER" in the "Device" drop-down menu.

The driver I installed is version 102 from TEAC's download page: http://www.teac.com/product/ud-501/downloads/

Excuse my ignorance but is ASIO a PC only driver? What do Mac users do if they have a DSD DAC and want to convert PCM to DSD on the fly?

You're right that ASIO is PC only.

On Mac, you'll select 'DSD in DoP format' in DSP Studio > Output Format to enable real-time DSD output.
