I don't want to switch fully to MC19 yet - but I would like to play around with it and contribute to working out any bugs.
Can I just run MC19 on one of my Clients and keep MC18 on the Server?

It probably won't work.  The format has changed.  But you could run MC19 independently, leaving MC18 there for client purposes.  They can co-exist as long as the libraries are in different places.

Back up first.

Nor can you use MC19 as the server and use MC Mac 18 as a client.  This creates a little problem for JRiver...

Funny - I was going to post the same OP.

Why has the format changed - what was the technical advantage of the change ?

19.009 will work as server for MC18, iirc, but not after that. All three if my HTPCs are running MC19 now, just for this reason. All is well for me so far.

Is it possible to run MC19 independent of MC18 running its server?  Else, this MC19 format change is going to mess with my MC18(Mac) client!

Try running the Media Server in MC18 and not in MC19.  See what happens and let us know.

I will ... but MC19 is currently analyzing my Blues folder ... could be some time    8)

However, with MC19 running, I do see a process named "Media Center Service".  Is there any possibility running MC18 will interfere with this generically named service, or vice versa?   ?

TIA  :)

I've been trying this, but I access/play our media via a user login (not admin), and Win8 is constantly asking for the admin password.  It will work if I run MC18, but if I also run MC19 (strictly for playback), then MC18 on my Mac (and JRemote) are not able find the server.  I'd try it from the admin account, but the library is located inside the "user" folder, and besides, I do not want family & friends accessing the media with admin privileges.

It seems to me there is a commandline that I can use for starting only the MC18 media server at "user" login (using the admin pw), but I cannot remember the exact syntax(?)

TIA  :)

... come to think ... what you're suggesting is simply not practical.  That is, I'd have to maintain 2 libraries just so MC18(Mac) can access the library.  I'll have to forsake one or the other   :'(
