Intel 4600 graphics good enough???
« on: August 27, 2013, 11:01:54 pm »

It's time for me to build a new HTPC and I'd like input on potential for using the HD4600 graphics from a low power i7 4765T.

Like everyone else, I'm trying to balance the best PQ, a nearly silent build, and something that will be low power / low heat.  I'm plan to use a Silverstone GD07 case, but that case will be inside a rack that is effectively a 5 sided box (only the front is open), so I'm really trying to minimize heat.

If I can get a workable solution using the 35 Watt CPU alone, I'd love to give it a go. And I love the fact that the Haswells fixed the frame rate bug... some folks say they don't even notice it on Sandybridge or Ivybridge, but it really bugs the heck out of me when it happens.

BTW, no gaming, just video playback of uncompressed 1080P rips in .mkv files in JRiver 18... or maybe 19 depending on how long I drag my feet on this build.

I was originally planning on a previous generation i3 T part (3220T) with a passive HD 7750 card, but I'm worried that will still be too much power draw.

Can anyone give me advise on this?  Thanks a bunch for the help.

There are plenty of threads about HD4000 performance. It really depends on what settings you plan to run.

Basically, the HD4000 can run anything from RO Standard to Medium/High settings on ROHQ, as long as you don't try to deinterlace HD material.

I don't know if a HD4600 will be able to handle that, I somehow doubt it.

As said above, it'll be fine with standard to medium-ish settings in ROHQ. If you want to run 'maximum' settings within MadVR (ROHQ) then you will need to add another card.

I'm running an i3-2120T but planning to add Zotac's new GT640 GK208 once I can get my hands on one. Basically it's a newer model GT640 with passive cooling, DDR5 and TDP 49W. They've been released in Japan and can be sourced in some euro countries.... Hoping to try and get one delivered to Australia soon :)

Some other details if interested - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Zotac-GK208-GT-630-640,23319.html

Lonx, thanks for the input and maybe a few follow up questions...

I was originally planning on running almost the same CPU you currently have, (i3-2220T) with a passive HD 7750... but had a few concerns... they don't seem to be too available any more, none in stock at newegg and I was worried about a passive card in my case... but the card you picked is even lower power than the 7750, so that might work.

A few questions to you or anyone else reading the thread...

What about the Trinity or Richland APUs... from what I'm reading they have more powerful graphics than the Haswell... but can they reproduce the 23.976 frame rate accurately?

Also, I'm not very knowledgeable about madVR, but am aware of the RO settings in jriver... from your post, are you saying ROHQ is actually using madVR (sorry for the newbie question).

thanks for the help!

Hey jcurry, sorry I couldn't give you more detail. You are right about the 7750 being considerably more powerful and it may be a good question to pose (vs the GT640 Kepler/GK208 with DDR5)  on the MadVR / Doom9 forums. In terms of grunt, the 7750 has it but I'm not sure how much performance difference that would be with madVR.

You have me wondering now as well as I honestly hadn't considered the 7750 passive :)

As far as the low power i3's go, I couldn't be happier. Mine sits on a Z77 board with 7 sata slots, 8gb of fast ddr3 and it sits on around 10% cpu utilisation for 1080p and DTS-MA decoding on the normal (non-ROHQ) setting in JRiver. Very cheap to run and plenty to spare until you start trying to run MadVR and the intel HD graphics choke naturally, lol.

Just looking at a review of the GTX 760... might be a bit pricier, but check out the fan noise. I'll look a bit more later, have to work :(

This might be of interest?? Nice article on the HD4600, if you haven't seen it already http://www.missingremote.com/review/intel-hd-4600-madvr-performance

The upcoming AMD Kaveri platform could be a game changer - esp if it gets GDDR5 ram  :D

Arindelle, I saw that post and read it thru... my take away is that the Haswells are good, but not quite good enough.  That's why I'm considering the A10-6700, but I can find a whole lot of reviews of how is support madVR, etc.

Dean70, I agree the Kaveri might be more interesting, but those parts look like they are in 2014 now.  I've been putting this off for a while and I don't want to wait any longer.

Anyone have experience with an A10-6700's ability to run ROHQ... again I don't game and all my files are 1080p in .mkv containers.

Also how does the A10 do with 23.976 fps?

Anyone?

Just an update on my thinking here.  I've decided to go with the Haswell instead of the A10-6700, now I just need to decide between the i3-4340 (at 54W) or the i5-4570s (at 65w).

Can anyone give an opinion on this?

I think the two have identical graphics performance, and similar CPU performance in single-threaded apps, with the i5 having better performance in multi-threaded apps.

Any thoughts is it work the extra 11w to go with the i5?

I'm really trying to build a low power / quite HTPC.

I'd choose i5. MC is heavily multithreaded.

Which IGP does it have?

They both have the HD4600.
