Freezes and Locking w/MC18 and more with 19
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:44:26 am »

Some time back I started having problems with MC18 freezing, sometimes it only freezes for several seconds (the screen goes gray and the little windows info window pops up) and after 5 or 10 seconds MC will recover, but most times it does not, the program will lockup and while its says its buffering, nothing ever happens.

If it does not recover, the server/computer has to be restarted (restarting MC alone does not correct the problem) and in that case the computer will not shut down on its own, it goes to the windows is shutting down window, but hangs there. It appears windows has also locked and a hard reboot is required, on restart things are okay for an hour or day or maybe a few days.

Sometimes MC will freeze or lock when I switch tracks/albums, typically when switching from one bitrate to another. Its also very common for first thing in the morning, when making the first selection of the day, to have it lock and say its buffering, which of course it never recovers from and a manually induced full reboot has to take place.

I generally leave my computer/server and DAC on 24/7. The current computer is a fresh custom build, running windows 7, its only used as a music server. The DAC is an Esoteric D07X connecting asynchronous via USB. This was a problem with 18 even when I was using a basic laptop, got no better with the new server and its worse with 19.

When it runs, its great, no problems with installs/upgrades, just this one bug. Do I have an incorrect setting, could it be the drivers, I need some help.

It sounds to me like the audio driver / hardware is causing problems.

I would recommend trying Direct Sound under Options > Audio for a few days to see if it fixes the issue.

If it solves the problem, then switch to WASAPI and test again.  A little more here:

That sounds like the problem with Chrome.

Try changing the internal browser from Chromium to Internet Explorer in:

Tools->Options->Tree & View->Web Browser->Engine

Switching to direct sound is something I could do just for a test, but it down mixes the hi-res tracks to 44.1. Not a viable long-term fix...

Are you using any other software with MC?

The Esoteric driver for the DAC.

Please do so, as a test.

Thanks.

Worked for me and several other people, example at:

Same results in direct sound mode.

I've noticed a trend to the locking, when going from one format to another, switching say from a 44.1 to a 192 or 192 to 88.2 or whatever, that's when it seems to happen, or its at least most likely to happen... There's no real pattern that I can detect. But that does seem to be a common denominator. It doesn't explain the first track of the day lock ups, unless maybe there is a format change happening by coincidence? I've never noted what the format of last track of the evening played was and what the first of the AM track format was.

On a separate note: When using MC19 I'm getting some stalling or pauses with MC when just clicking around through my albums or settings. The program will stop for 5 or 10 seconds, sometimes it will gray-out then resume, if its playing music the music doesn't stop, but you can not change tracks or access any settings/controls when it happens.

Out of curiosity, have you used Fidelizer on your PC?

Matt / Jim H
I switched to direct mode, didn't take very long for MC to lockup. It does seem to happen mainly when switching from one bitrate to another.
