Norton NPE Reports Media Center 19 as "Bad" application
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:31:13 am »

Hi All:
I didn't remove version 19 after the notice, but the developers may want to work with Symantec to remove the "bad" rating.
Congrats on a great program, I love it!

Aren't these ratings based on user input?

Please report the problem to Symantec, assuming that you downloaded from this site.

Maybe they are using street slang now, such as:

Yo! This Jay River is some bad app, bro!

Norton is the bad app. It should give you warning about running it self.

With all respect but I think this is bad advise. A good antivirus does not interfere with MC.

With all respect but I think this is bad advise. A good antivirus does not interfere with MC.

An antivirus will inspect opened files / network data flaw (audio/video files can be stored elsewhere (NAS / Radio / Web / ...)) / ...
This can potentially add latency and some stability problems (system & software).

I never used any antivirus on my MC station (dedicated to MC stuff only)... and never got issues with "virus".
A good thing is to place your MC station behind a firewall + place both MC station and storage on the same (v)LAN.

A firewall stops attacks from the outside. By far the most threats these days come from the inside. A firewall doesn't stop malicious code on webpages you visit. Advertisement providers (banners on websites) can be infected but also some websites can be hacked and code injected into them. Even if you don't visit webpages, MC accesses the internet via API's for metadata and pictures and you could also simply miss-click and accidently open wiki, AMG or google via the links provided. All it takes is malicious banner or some evil code on that page and you're toast.

I'm not denying an antivirus program can't cause the problems you mention, but I think its a better practice to try and solve the problems rather than to remove antivirus altogether.

Generally speaking, advising to remove AV software is not good IMO. If it works for you that's cool but it shouldn't be promoted as good practice.

Removing AV depends very much on what you use the HTPC for. I ONLY play media through MC, hence I do not need AV there at all. The scan are done on the server side. I do agree however that it's not a solution for most people. Sooner or later you'll hit some nasty stuff or make a mistake while surfing or opening some mail attachments.

That's why I talked about a MC dedicated PC.
If you have a PC for multi use (web browsing, ..), it's still better to run with an AV.
If you have a PC dedicated for MC stuff only (my own case), question may arise.
In the second case, I prefer not to have any AV running.

That's better stated ;).

I only disagreed with the general statement that its
