Gizmo as an iOS App ...
« on: September 12, 2013, 07:56:15 am »

As I understand it, the JRiver approach is not to develop a Gizmo app for iOS but rather to encourage iThingy users to use Web Gizmo.

IMHO the nice part about an app is that you have a proper icon on the iThingy desktop that you can tap // and the bad part about Web Gizmo is that you have to go into your browser Favorites list to find it  :(

So (in the interest of better WAF) my suggestion to JRiver is that you develop a minimalist iOS app, (just with an icon on the desktop that you can tap), which basically just jumps you to the Web Gizmo url on your browser.

We think JRemote is excellent, and others seem to agree.

The only hole that I know about is video playback on the device itself.  I've been trying to talk Robert (author of JRemote) into adding support.  You could try too if it's important to you.

Andrew, there IS a way to create an icon for essentially a webpage in iOS. I can try to figure out how I've done it in the past, or you can Google it. I may have required an accessory app like Dropbox or Google Drive to allow me to create it though.

Yep. Navigate to your starting Web Gizmo page (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:51299 -- or whatever), and once the page loads, tap the 'share' icon in the bottom toolbar and choose "Add to Home Screen".

This only works if you are using Safari to access WebGizmo. If you want to use a 3rd-party iOS browser, I'm not sure how to make that work....
