I run my PC as a pre amp, into an amp...no volume, tone controls...
Can someone explain volume protection, max volume, internal volume reference level?
I've lower these to 50%, but I want finer control over the volume...and not so much max volume.
These don't seem to do anything.

AND I get an AWEFUL pop/click when I hit volume mute! Not cool...

You could also add a Parametric Equalizer effect like -12 dB to all channels so 100% volume isn't as loud.

I scoured thru the wiki last night but couldn't find that.
I'd prefer to not add any DSP to my audio stream at all, but the loudness option sounds interesting.
Regardless, I now have my volume setting set

Does the pop seem to change volume based on how loud the internal volume is currently set?  If not, do you have any DSP enabled at all?  I once had a similar pop, but it was under very specific circumstances involving DSP use.

To be clear, muting with Internal Volume should be silent.  I believe only a buggy DSP or incorrect user setting (see link above) could cause any noise.

I run internal volume...and I'm running Ambio One VST plugin. I'll test with it off...

With that said, a nice mute option would be a smooth, auto-sliding volume slider. Both off and on. Or barring that, a dB cut on muting.
Hard off/on...I worry about my rack!

If it helps, both pause and stop can optionally fade.  Look in Options > Audio.

Matt, you read my mind.  OP, try it with your DSP off, and if that solves it, make sure you have "process independently of internal volume" disabled for your DSP.

Couldn't find an explanation on wiki...
Will this prevent ANY other sounds from coming out of the sound card outside of MC?
I'm concerned when navigating websites, for example, with MC set to maximize device volume during playback, if I get one of those annoying pop ups that play audio, it'll blow my speakers!! Lol

Do not enable 'Process independently' unless it's a visualization.  Otherwise it will cause popping.

As Matt said, "process independently" should be disabled, that's almost certainly why you're getting a pop.

Exclusive mode should do what you want, but test it with the amp volume low first.  If you want to be very sure that no sound comes out of your speakers except through JRiver, one way to deal with that is by setting the windows default output device to a sound device that isn't hooked up to anything.  For example, I have JRiver outputting to my actual sound interface that's hooked up to my speakers, and my windows default sound output device is set to output to my motherboard soundcard (realtek, etc.) which is not connected to anything.  

That solves two problems:  first, no surprises from websites or windows sounds playing through my speakers at high volume, and second, it allows the use of JRiver's loopback function if I want those sounds.  If I turn on loopback, I can still get all the web and windows sounds (but fed through JRiver and using JRiver's DSP and volume control).

Interesting, I haven't run into that issue in a while.  Does your default soundcard have a digital output (SPDIF, etc.)?  That's what I use and mine doesn't require anything be plugged into it.  Additionally, you might try plugging in a disconnected cable to your default soundcard and see if that works (if it's just testing to see if there's something in the jack).  In the worst case, if you have a cheap set of earbuds lying around you'd be willing to sacrifice for the cause, that would almost certainly fool it into thinking something was attached.
