If you choose to "play" go to Help > Benchmark and post the result along with your computer info.

I'd also like to know if there is a direct correlation to higher the number the better the sound or whatever it might help with.

Compared my Mac Mini (2009, 2.53 GHZ, 8GB of Ram, 40GB SSD) with a 2012 Mac Mini (2.5Ghz Intel I5, 16GB of Ram, 64GB SSD).  Both Machines were set up identically and at that point both machines were running Audirvana.  When I compared the 2 Mac Minis everything else in the system was the same.

The upshot was that even though the 2012 had more memory and a faster processor I did not like the sound as much.

A computer does not need much horsepower when playing PCM.  Where it needs the horsepower is when converting DSD to PCM or PCM to DSD.  A faster computer will convert faster.

There are many many factors that can hurt sound.  Dirty power, Power Supplies where the music is stored, OS, what else is running on the computer, USB cable and on and on and on...

Well I found something very interesting. I installed JRMC19 for Windows under Bootcamp on the same Mac Mini. The score is significantly better when running under Windows 8 than Mac OS. Wonder why that is?

Well, we've been spending the last decade tuning performance based on results derived from the Microsoft C++ compiler and Windows OS subsystems, so it's not too surprising that there's a pretty hefty difference.  Over time, we will tune performance on Mac to bring it up closer (or beyond?) the Windows level.  Possibly the first area to address (pun intended) is memory allocation, which is currently quite a bit slower on the Mac platform.

Hey John! Thanks for the thoughtful explanation, makes sense and it is appreciated. And by the way, it was not intended as a slight at the Mac version, more intellectual curiosity.

Would you be willing to post the full result from each platform?  Maybe use the fastest result from two or three runs on each platform.

I'd like to compare them line-by-line.  Thanks.

Thanks for the report.

The math scores are identical on each platform.  That's good, because it shows the hardware is operating roughly at parity on both systems.  The math test is the one test that doesn't really involve much code or JRiver stuff -- it's just a raw CPU performance test.  That means comparing the rest of the numbers should be valid.

In the image section, Windows is running away on memory allocation and writing.  When it gets to rendering that's more CPU intensive and less memory intensive, they get pretty close.  Looking at our code, one thing I see is that there's an assembly memory fill in the image engine not unlocked on Mac yet.  We'll look at this.

In the database code, it's really close on the normal operations like grouping, sorting, etc.  That means real-world performance will be quite similar.  However, the memory allocation difference shows again during the create database section.  We'll have to investigate this.  It may turn out that more aggressive caching (to reduce memory allocation) of string objects or something could help Mac a lot.

Anyway, thanks for doing the tests.  I hope it helps us make the Mac version faster.

I spent some time optimizing areas highlighted by the benchmarks above.

Next build of MC19 Mac should be around 40% faster on the DB portion of the benchmark and 5% faster on the image portion.  This is measured with a Mac Mini quad core, but I would expect other machines to show a similar improvement.

bplexico, maybe you could post your Mac results again once the new build is available.

Double Damn! Thanks Matt - I will do so once the next build is available.

I am going to try it again in a day under Mavericks lest it was doing some bizarre set of background tasks...

Can I arrange for a single day trial extension so I can chime in on this thread?

From my 2012 rMBP I can test:
- OS Mavericks
- Windows 7 via Parallels
- Windows 7 via Bootcamp

Thanks!
