Additional Rules for Play Doctor?
« on: September 21, 2013, 04:13:55 pm »

Hi,

is there a way to restrict Play Doctor to take only "X" tracks from the same artist for creating a new playlist?
Also: I set "Number plays" is "less than or equal to 2". Still, I get the seed track repeated in my playlist many times. And also other tracks.

As an example:
I took "Survival" from "Muse" as seed. Settings are to "some variety", which I like. Look at the created playlist below,  first 50 tracks:

Expression   Length
1. Survival (Muse)   4:17
2. when sorrows came (FM4 Soundselection)   4:33
3. Animals (Muse)   4:22
4. Sick (Sneaker Pimps)   4:14
5. A Song For The Deaf (Queens Of The Stone Age)   6:42
6. The 2nd Law : Unsustainable (Muse)   3:48
7. Dressing Up (The Cure)   2:49
8. Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)   6:53
9. Survival (Muse)   4:17
10. Imitationen (Tocotronic)   4:16
11. Unendlich (Silbermond)   3:56
12. Explorers (Muse)   5:46
13. Spin Spin Sugar (Sneaker Pimps)   8:45
14. Animals (Muse)   4:22
15. Du Hast (Rammstein)   3:54
16. And She Was (Talking Heads)   3:39
17. The 2nd Law : Unsustainable (Muse)   3:48
18. Twilight (U2)   4:22
19. Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong (Radiohead)   4:39
20. Survival (Muse)   4:17
21. Mein Ruin (Tocotronic)   5:45
22. Get Inside (Stone Sour)   3:14
23. Explorers (Muse)   5:46
24. nothing to lose (FM4 Soundselection)   3:52
25. Moment Of Surrender (U2)   7:20
26. Animals (Muse)   4:22

32. The 2nd Law : Unsustainable (Muse)   3:48
33. Punch Drunk (Live Chicago) (Bonus Track) (Incubus)   6:06
34. Animals (Muse)   4:22

You could use 'More Variety' (the default) if you want more variety.

Also, if the program can't find a lot of other music like the seed, the seed might get repeated more often.  So you could try with a larger seed (lots of files, a genre, etc.).

Thanks for reply Matt, but unfortunately this doesn´t solve the issue. Also: I have 15,000 tracks with a wide variety of genres. Muse as seed should be easily "solvable" for Play Doctor.

The point is that

1) I want to take only "X" tracks from the same artist for creating a new Play Doctor-playlist.

2) I want to set "Number plays" is "less than or equal to 2", meaning that only tracks with play counters <2 will be selected --> this one can be set, but it has no impact. I see this as a "bug" or "non working feature" of Play Doctor!

EDIT
And also, if I set Play Doctor from "less variety" to "more variety", I still get every appr. fifth song from the same seed artist.

EDIT2
And if I set Play Doctor from "more variety" to "a lot variety", I get every appr. 7-10 th song from the same seed artist.

Thx

Hi,
I am still wondering, how I can restrict Play Doctor to play only x songs from the same artist? At the moment, I get a track from the seed artist every 5-10 songs, which is annoying.

Any "trick", how to configure Play Doctor the right way? :)

Thx

Hi JRiver,
no answer on this? Play Doctor is not working the correct way - if I set following rule:
NUMBER PLAYS   IS LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO     2
then still I get songs, which have been played more than 2 times before.

Also it would be great to add some more rule possibilities - like that:

ARTIST      DONT ADD MORE SONGS TO PLAYLIST THAN          2 (or whatever number)

ARTIST      DONT ADD AGAIN, WHICH WERE PLAYED LAST        2days/2 weeks/2 months etc.

TRACK       DONT ADD SAME TO PLAYLIST MORE THAN            1 times (or whatever number)

Thx :)

Sorry, I have to revise my previous mail. I tested it again, and now, using NUMBER PLAYS   IS LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO     2 works!

But still, it would be fantastic to give some more flexibility to PLAY DOCTOR by adding more rules for ARTIST and TRACK

Thx!

...did I read somewhere that Play Doctor does not like over many Genres.
Is that true that Play Doctor behaves better with fewer Genres?

Play Doctor uses the genre as one of the metrics for finding similar tracks.

If no other files use the same genre, or if your genre tags are messy, this won't work as well.

I wonder what you meant when you used the word Messy - do you mean a lot of Genres?

What if you have stored multiple genres in a file? Is that a problem? I tagged all my tracks with last.fm genres...
