Report on Noise Reduction Applications
« on: March 12, 2002, 02:45:38 pm »

As promised.

I have tried a few recording/noise reduction applications. The ones that only recorded and organized, I dismissed. We already have an excellent one of those.
The ones that cost more than $40 US, I dismissed as being too expensive.
So what I was after was free to cheap with the most useful features. I won’t list them but I do have a winner.
A German product called WavePurity by Difitech.
They have a few products but there are three that are acceptable based on the above criteria.

WavePurity Light is freeware. The ONLY freeware I was able to find. There are advantages and disadvantages besides the cost. There is a limit of 5 minutes of recording time and a fairly regular nag screen appears. But the editing is more or less automatic if you want to use the Wizard. It very effectively removes “clicks, pops & crackles”. The setting for each of these filters can be adjusted if you know what you are doing. I don’t. I’m just after results.

WavePurity Mini has more features. There is no limit on time and no nag screens. It’s not free, however. It costs $20 EU which is about $16 US right now.

What I went with was WavePurity Standard. $30 EU or approximately $26 US.

The coolest thing about all of them is the ability to record at 45 RPM and slow down to 33-1/3. That cuts the time that you have to monitor your initial wav recording by about 26%.

The web site can fill you in on details of each version if you’re interested.

I didn’t forget about Media Jukebox. This is a new company that has only had an official release for a little more than two years. They might be interested in some sort of bundling with either Light or Mini.
Just an idea. I know this sort of thing has been discussed before.

Would you recommend this to someone who is already using Cooledit NR or  Clickfix eventhough they may not be in the same price range? Does it clean the LPs better than those 2 softwares?

Charlemagne 8 - sorry, I don't do line-in recording so I don't tend to have these problems. I do however have 1 file that has a click at the beginning so I'll download the freeware version and give it a try.

I will give a try next week
Are you sure you can play lp 33 at 45  when you rip?
They speak only about playing 78 at 45.I understand it as having a bigger file you can work easily on it

Editor/Format. You can select the original speed to convert to from the speed that you recorded it in. Either side goes from 16 to 78. There is even a option to apply a percentage to the speed conversion. You can preview before converting. Make sure you maximize the Editor window or you won't see every option you need to see. Minor bug. If the record is very scratched, it doesn't work so well. The greater speed seems to exaggerate the big pops. If it's in good shape though, it works well.

but converting speed isn't all you need to do... 78's need to be played with a different pick-up (is it pick-up? the needle thing you put on disc...).

Hello Charlemagne 8 & Others - I have been fairly happy with Goldwave, once I learned how to use it.  Sadly I had to re-format my computer due to Windows 98 prob's.  Now I don't remember which Version of Goldwave I had as they have 2, e.g. A 32 bit Version 4.25 $40US & a 16 bit Version 3.03.  I think it was the 16 bit.  Can anyone explain the difference between 16 bit & 32 bit?

Also to Charlemagne 8 - Have you used Goldwave & if so, of the two e.g. Goldwave, Wave Purity would you go for?  To add to that, I also remember a thread discussing another similar Noise Reduction program that looked to be very polished & profesional looking, I think it was "Audio Cleaning Lab", but it had a $40-$50 price tag & I think you had to register before you could even download it, so I don't know what all that was about? - Which one would you go for as I have limited funds & time?

It appears that the guy/s behind Wave Purity seem to be doing a continuous improvement thing like MJ.  I sent them an email asking - Once I've paid my cash, does it entitle me to free future upgrades or just for the Version I get at the time ... But I still haven't heard back from him/them.

Regards - Rusty.

Rusty,
I started with Goldwave. I wasn't happy with the Click, Pop and Crackle removal but it could be that I didn't know which order to do it in. It makes a BIG difference. WavePurity walks you through it, Goldwave doesn't. You can get a functioning version of WavePurity for free (see limitations above), the Goldwave I looked at was $40. I did look at "Audio Cleaning Lab". I even did all the things it would take to download it. It worked well but it was pricey. Maybe the thing that really sold me on WavePurity is the thing you brought up, even though I didn't realize it until you mentioned it ... it has the same feel as Media Jukebox as far as constant development and response with it's Beta testers.
As far as them E-mailing you back, it could be that not too many people there speak English. That's just a guess. But you asked them a good question. Maybe I'll try to follow up as I would like to know the answer to that also. I don't speak German, though.

Will give Wave Purity a try. Recorded a lot of tapes and got hiss. Will it remove this? I shut off my mike gain in windows and ended the noise but the next batch I recorded had some distortion. Recording seems to be an art. My computer requires that the volume be turned down so low you can barely hear them while recording. Have a lot of tapes to record so I hope I can get this solved.

I just rechecked on Audio Cleaning Lab and the Amazon.uk price is down to 17.99 pounds. That's around $26. If I had seen this price, I might have gone that way. Oh well. Done done it.

deerhunter,
WavePurity does an excellent job with tape hiss. The volume controls are very straightforward and it has a real time VU meter ("LED" type. I wish they had the needle type. I loved those on tape decks) to watch for clipping, which is the distortion you're talking about. You can also choose which sound card for input and which for output (if you have more than one) and which mode in each (i.e. microphone, line-in, mixer, etc.) to use.

Have a look at the post "slow ripping' There is a link from ZRocker with a lot about lp to cd

You bought the software? There is a 2 weeks of one month full fonctions trial i saw

Most of this softwares if they are from Europe have 2,3 ,sometimes only one working on it
So you may not get a Amazone look a like fast answer. To understand and answer in english can be a problem.Once a week when a fiend who is good in english is coming
The fact to be able to rip at 45 rpm 33rpm looks like a big plus. But how much space do you want for one lp on waves, editing, correcting and so one?So ,in fact you cannot spend a day putting a lot of lps on the hard drive at 45 or 78 rpm,and just work at the computer the next days
I will have a try,but with my mini-disc,i am now just ..lazy

I spend money on my tape desk ONLY because it has Needle Vu meter
The Velvet Underground sleeve has needle VU meter..
