Reaction time Crossfade
« on: March 11, 2002, 11:11:00 pm »

I have my crossfade turned on as aggressive and 7 seconds.
When I click next (for the next song), it takes a few seconds before the next song starts.
On what is this based on how long it takes before the song starts and/or is this influencable ?

My gues is it has to buffer the MP3 into memory the moment you click next.
If so, can't it buffer the next song in the playlist automatic the moment a song starts to play ?
See products like "BPM Studio" (is not competition, is only meant for in bars or clubs) which does that.

What do you think ?

BPM Studio may not be direct competition, but I think it's GUI is worth a look.
Maybe it's a little complicated, but the general look is attractive.  Although
I do hate green text on a black background.

That latency is exactly what Options -> Playback -> Advanced -> More Skip Resistant vs. More Responsive controls.

We error on the side of skip resistance by default, so it's probably a good idea to tweak the setting.

Couldn't MJ start playing immediately and buffer a large amount ahead anyway afterwards? I'd like MJ to react as quick as in V7 but I hate clicks and pops while playing...

It's not quite that simple.  You have to keep the soundcard fed, and basically once you give the soundcard some data, there's no getting it back.  So if that buffer isn't big enough, the sound card goes hungry during high CPU usage and sputters.  That's what the performance slider adjusts.

On the other hand, the read-ahead buffering is automatically allocated by MJ to be optimal -- and this isn't ever the issue with latency problems.

Take care.

Cool.  Now what do people think of the look.  Is it "dowdy"?

I must apologize for not infusing this thread with socio-economic multi-cultural blather.  I promise to try harder next time.

"winampy" is now an acceptable adjective!  And the sad part is, I knew exactly what I meant.

I need to go away from this for a while.
