Transfer MAC ITunes to PC JRiver ?
« on: September 28, 2013, 01:45:36 pm »

We've extensive ITunes music library on MAC iBook G4 via its internal hd.
We've newly installed JRiver MC on Win PC.
We desire to 'import' all ITunes library into JRiver on the PC.
All ITunes are personally ripped as *.aif .

Any possibilities for automation ?
Any step-by-step procedures ?

Thank you in advance.

There are a few things you'll want to experiment with first, so let's start simply.

How are you going to make your media files available - over the network, or are you going to copy them to your PC?

If over the network, you'll need to share the iTunes Music folder.  If copying, do that first, and place the files on your PC somewhere.

Go to Tools > Import > Configure Auto-Import... and Add your music folder, and let MC import the files.  Once imported, take a look at how the files are grouped, etc.  This will indicate how good the file tags are.  Perhaps you're done at this point, or maybe you'll want more...

The iTunes music folder is typically under your home directory, in:

    Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music

MrC:
Appears your reply will get us going, thx!

fwiw:

1) We've not yet committed to a storage plan:
Considering NAS; Perhaps large SATA drive connected directly to PC.
Highest quality is desired.
Let's say we are "COPYING".
ie, The iTunes computer will be permanently retired After transfers are complete.

We have performed the below steps with zero success:

1) Saved the album folder from computer #1 (containing *.aif files, personally ripped) to usb drive dongle.

2) Plugged usb drive dongle into computer #2.

3) On computer #2, launch JRiver MC19.

4) Navigated to / select:
Audio (pane), Tools, Import, Import to a single folder, Next, Browse,
'pick the album folder', Finish,  after some processing <1minute MC shows success pane indicating track statistics (ie, success),
select Audio (pane),  R.Click on blank album square of the just imported, select Download from internet,
see album cover art, select desired album cover, end.

5) Select above album to play.

6) JRiver MC19 reports "Playback Problem    Something went wrong with playback   Details:  The file could not be found.  Check that the filename in the library matches the filename on disk."

7) Investigation shows MC19 has the filename listed as being on the usb drive (E:) used for temporary transport.

8 ) Further search on computer #2 reveals none of the subject expected *.aif files.

Bottom line:  MC19 shows confirmation of successful "Import" but nothing there.

Unfortunately, we paid an intern to import ~1000 albums for us..... a long days work.... and all apparently for not.
?, Thx in advance.

If I'm reading your post correctly u have a fatal error. I would of copied the music from usb to pc2 hd then go to JR and import the files accordingly from pc2 hd and not from usb. if the files are still on the usb drive plug it into the same port u used the first time, JR should then be able to find the files. if u don't want to have the usb plugged in all the time for music you must copy or move the files onto the pc2 hd and delete JR current library and re import aiming at the file location on hd pc2
We have performed the below steps with zero success:

Hmmm.... thanks for the reply,.
Your input would, apparently, provide a method for a successful full re-do.
It would need to be a Full REDO because all was erased from the subject usb drives.
The library location in MC, per default, is a subfolder on the main drive (C)....
When a user IMPORTS into a program, they should expect it to go under the default location or be prompted.
I suggest the bottom line, for MC, is that it has a bad BUG..... ie, should not inform of success.

thx.

I think you're a bit confused on the term 'Import' for this type of application. JR did what it was supposed to do, it imported the location and meta data it needed to play the files. once u removed the drive from the usb u also removed the files.

Thank you for the information.
Associate & Load are more common terms in our studio....
Is there a location within JR where I might read definitions ?
