I bought JRiver for detailed, audiophile access to my music (only music, many genres including classical), hoping that there would be a finished interface available. Haven't found it yet... any pointers? (Win 8 and Win 7 systems, 3TB HD).

I guess I don't understand the question.  What do you mean by a "finished interface"?  Are you trying to disable features that aren't related to audio?

Thanks for your reply. I ultimately need an attractive skin that is searchable by genre, ensemble type, solo voice, period/origin and file format, as well as the usual album and artist.

The "Skin" is the look of the application and can be changed via View → Skin

I think what you actually meant was a library view, rather than a skin though.
Right-click the "Audio" heading in the side-bar and select Add Library View…
Select "Panes" from the list.

Now you can customize this view by right-clicking it and selecting Customize View….
You can add/edit/remove as many items to the panes view as you want.

Media Center is extremely customizable so you should be able to set it up however you want to view/sort your files.

OK, I'm resigned that there's nothing "off the shelf" that will fit. One last thing, is there a list of fields that WILL populate automatically from most CDs? Thanks.

I don't know what Media Center will automatically tag discs with, as I don't use it for ripping, nor do I have many classical discs in my collection.

If it is classical music that you want data for, Sonata Music Server might be a better option than MC19, as they have a database specifically built for tagging classical music with more than 50,000 albums.
I don't know if there's any way to license or access SonataDB via JRiver Media Center, and I don't personally have any experience using the program.

dBpoweramp can grab data from the GD3 database when ripping a CD and populate some of those tagging fields.  SONATA uses that database.

How did you rip your CDs?  Do the files already have tags for things like solo artist, ensemble, period, and other things you want to sort and search on?

If you already have those fields and data in your files then you can create custom views in JRiver Media Center to display those fields and search and sort on those fields.  If you don't already have that data in your tags then things are more difficult.

In general, at rip time the usual suspects like album, title, track, artist, release year, genre are populated.
The results pretty much depends on the internet database used.
JRiver uses its own YADB and FreeDB
In case of classical, you often find the composer in the artist field and hopefully the performers in the album artist.
Most of the time it is a bit of a mess.

Sonata is MC18+dBpoweramp.
As you have JRiver already, you might consider using dBpoweramp as it pulls its meta data from 4 different sources including GD3

Yes, this is why I suggested it - Sonata are a JRiver partner.
It would be nice if Media Center users could simply pay a license fee to access the SonataDB rather than having to buy a separate product though.
