Pops and clicks during Media Center 19 playback
« on: October 13, 2013, 09:31:55 pm »

I am a newbie, and have just purchased my first computer to be used as a music server.  I am having a problem in that I am getting snaps and pops when attempting play back of primarily 24bit/96khz flac files.  The pops will happen 2 to 3 times a minute in the middle of songs. Usually pops, sometimes very loud sharp snaps.  There are many fewer pops when playing ripped cd's 16bit/44.1 khz.

Configuration
Computer:
Shuttle XS35GS V3 low power mini computer
Intel NM10 chip set
Intel® Atom™ D2550 1.86GHz dual-core processor
4GB DDR3 memory
Audio Card: Integrated IDT 92hd81
Windows 8 32bit OS
Currently no virus scan software
All files are saved locally on SAMSUNG, 500GB 840 Series SSD
JRiver and Adobe Reader are the only programs I have installed on this computer.

DAC:
Classe CP-800 DAC/PreAmp
Asychronus USB
Set as default with "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" & "Give exclusive mode applications priority"

JRiver:
JRiver 19.0.54
These are the settings that are working best for me.
WASAPI Event Style
Open device for exclusive access
PLay a little silence on DoP stop
Bitdepth - Automatic
Buffering _ 100 milliseconds

No output formatting
Bitstreaming None
Prebuffering 20 seconds
Play silence at startup for hardware synchronization 1 second
Play files from memory
No Plug Ins
I can use the same settings playing the same files using my Intel I7/Windows 7 64 bit HP Elite Book laptop and I have no problems - sounds great.
I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Welcome to the forum.

Try the audio option called "Disable event style".

Thanks for your responses.

It does not play at all with "Disable event style."

I changed the setting to high performance and that did not help.

When I run the JRiver Benchmark utility on the machine, it only gets a score of 664.  Does this machine not have the guts to stream bit perfect music through USB?

When I look at Task Manager, I see JRiver only using 2% of cpu cycles at most.  The only other thing I see using cycles is "System Interrupts/Deferred procedure calls and interrupt service routines" at up to 4% - is this typical?

It's not a great machine, but you shouldn't have trouble playing music.

Try adjusting the audio settings for buffer in MC.  Smaller may be better.

There was a Microsoft hotfix for a USB problem.  I think there may be a link in the "Weird and Wonderful" thread on Interact.  It's in my signature.

With Windows 7 for instance, the default parameter
of the sound card is 96 kHz, 24 bits. This will
need to be changed to 44.1 kHz.
Configuration of the Windows output
(regardless of the media player)
Connect a USB cable between your computer
and the USB port located on the back panel
of the CP-800.
• In the lower left corner of the screen,
click on the Windows logo.
• In the new window click on Control Panel.
• Select the Sound icon (speaker).
• The CP-800 will appear in the new window,
click on it in order to highlight it, then click
again. In the new window, click on the Advanced tab.
