Help! "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" does not work on Particles
« on: October 29, 2012, 05:53:33 am »

I regorganised some content on my HDD (using Windows Explorer) to make auto backup easier, then went into MC and updated the path component of "Filename" using the "Find & Replace" feature of "Rename, Move & Copy Files" with "Update database to point to new location (no file rename, move or copy)" selected and it works with everything but Particles.

As this pic shows, when I try this on the Particles, they were all marked as <file not supported> yet I could edit each line individually but this would take a very long time.  Any idea how to change part of "Filename" to reflect my new path?

Thanks
Nathan

I think there is functionality here that fell out along the way.  When Ps were first introduced, MC would throw up this message and then do what it was told--the particles would move.  Now they just sit there looking at you.

Any update on support for this?  I just added another 16TB to my backup server so want to change some paths and don't fancy editing all my Particle Paths by hand again!
Thanks

Now I have RSI..... done it by hand again!

See only 28 hours later and they are all done... so what's the problem :D

Particles are another "feature" that still needs to be finished, I've avoided using them so far as it always seems to end in tears unfortunately.

Shame because the concept is great.

Bump.... I'm rebuilding my server and don't want to keep doing this by hand.  Is there an issue I'm missing as it does not seem too hard to me?

I've almost finished my rebuild of the HW.  Any chance of this fix?  Hate to nag but Matt/Jim please let me know if this is not a priority (which is fine - I just need to know if this fix is comming or not.... any Feedback would help!)
Thanks

We know there's some things we could improve with particles, but it's not at the top of the list right now.

If there are clear bugs or simple changes, it could happen soon.

But making Rename, Move, & Copy Files... work fully with particles is sort of a big one.

Thanks for the reply.

Can I suggest that just fixing this (easy??) bit --> allow "Rename, Move & Copy Files" with "Update database to point to new location (no file rename, move or copy)" to work again on particles as all it does is update the MC path info so you don't have to edit the path by hand (which works just fine).

Eg I rename a path in explorer and then just want to change the path in MC with this function.

My two new pools are all setup so I want to move some paths around.  No chance of a fix for this one anytime in the next week?  Let me know and I'll wait otherwise I'll reorganise and edit them all by hand (again)!

Wow it took only a couple of seconds for MC to change the file path for 18.5K itemsusing "Rename, Move & Copy Files" with "Update database to point to new location (no file rename, move or copy)".  I don't remember it being this quick before.  Unfortunately it will take me a fair bit longer to manually update the 392 Particles....  :'(

All finsihed.  Not even 20mins (though I'm now cross eyed and have RSI from repeating "double click, delete, delete, down arrow" all that time)

You're gonna hate me now.

I was able to accomplish this with a little trickery.  It boils down to two pasted expressions into the Filename (path) field.  It took about 20 seconds.  :-)

See - I knew I had to pay more attention when you tech stuff of expressions.   OK - what is it (for next time)!

In the latest example all I wanted to just remove the "\BackedUp" from the file path:

"\\MAIN\Media\BackedUp\Video\Music Video\Eagles\Farewell Tour\BDMV\index.bluray;1" --> "\\MAIN\Media\Video\Music Video\Eagles\Farewell Tour\BDMV\index.bluray;1"

First, disable auto-import and have MC not fix broken links.  This is important.

In a view, show all the files you want changed, including their particles and even artwork.

Select all the files, and in the tag action window, edit the Filename (path) field.  Enter an expression that will change the path to your needs.  For example:

  =replace([filename (path)], \BackedUp\, \)

You might be tempted to manually change the name.  Don't.  Use an expression like that above to do the assignment; you're going to use it again so that conditional changes are made.

As soon as you hit enter, confirm you want MC to change the field (shown as Filename).  MC will then get grumpy, complaining about a tagging error for the real files.  Laugh at it, and click OK.  You'll notice that the path to your particle files no longer match the path to the main file.

You can have MC remove the empty folders when it asks.

Now, here's the trick.  Do the same thing again, with the same expression and you're all done.  Since the expression above is semi-conditional (it can only change \BackedUp\ if it exists in the path), the fixup will complete the broken paths.

If the expression above is insufficient to ensure pass 2 will only hit the remaining files, it needs to be modified appropriately.

Thanks for that - I get it and had a play on a test file and particle... though I hope to never use it as I'm sure it will be fixed by "next time".  Did I mention your timing leaves a lot to be desired!  ;D

It seems whenever I post a workaround, Matt goes and fixes the root of the matter.  So here's to you jmone.

I'm sure it will be fixed right after I don't need to use it for the next 10 years.
