OT- installing large drives
« on: February 21, 2003, 11:11:38 am »

Few weeks now that i try to have my Maxtor 160 and my WesternDigital 250 set.

But no way ,at 128 ,they blow-up.
My motherboard is compatible with direct plug on it and mode LBA 48 bits,
the cables linking drives to motherboard as well.
Windows 2000 with all the updates  SP3 and others
Hours and hours of search to no results.
drives in  NTSF

I know i miss a small thing in my settings.
Many of you have +120 drives,so any tip to help me?

Thank you

I know your a guy and everything but did you read the directions that came with the drive?

Did you install the software that came on a small disk (3 1\2 inch floppy)?

I normaly have a problem with that my self.

=======================================

by the way there are some jumpers that need to be set on the drive.

also where they are located on the EIDE cable does matter. If memory recalls the first connecter is for master, second (last) for slave.

All of it is ok.
The drives are working fine up to 128.
If you try to put more data past the 128 - or the 137 ,its the same- they blow ,you lost all data and they are not formated anymore

I will try to help if I can.

I have 2 160GB drives running in hardware mirror, as well as other large drives.

The "size limit" is typically a function of your motherboard or your bios on the MB.

A few questions:

1. What is your motherboard and if it is an older MB, does it have a fairly new bios?

2. How did you partition your drives?

3. How did you format your drives?

4. Is your bios set to auto detect the drives at boot?

5. Does your post screen show the correct size drives?

6. Does Windows show the correct size drives?

7. Are you using the cables that came with the drives. Should be ATA/133 cables. (Ones with the blue end)

I will check back later to see if I can help with the info.

Cheers

You did not say if you installed the software that came with the drive.

Is talking about the 80 wire 40 pin cables, the wires look thiner. than the standard (older IDE cables)

If the bios will support the large drive, you will not need the software ( Max Blast or the like ) that came with the drive.

Let me give you the full picture.
I am REALLY not good at computers....
So i asked the shop where i buy all my stuff to install a new motherboard ,an Atlhon.
I had since few months the Maxtor 160 with a pentium 3 and an ATA 133 card. But ,in fact , NOT WORKING as a large drive. I did not know that..

Be cause i lost 137 giga of music not avaible anymore ,the shop 'gave' me an Western Digital caviar 200 at the price they pay it.
Yes you can say they are ok . But ,now i have 2 drives not working...

This information is last updated at Jan 30, 2003

I did get a BIOS update.
But ,no way when i take the number X by another X half the last number ,i still get a 137 GB ,not 160 or 200
You may understand what i mean...
It takes me A VERY LONG time  to find out how to run it, but i'am sure that i di it as you have to do.

2. How did you partition your drives?
I dont. They are only for mp3-Ape-

3. How did you format your drives?

From 'my computer ' format to NTSF' NOt quick
"enable compression ' NOT check

4. Is your bios set to auto detect the drives at boot?
yes

5. Does your post screen show the correct size drives?
Not sure what ' post screen' is ,si i cannot answer you

6. Does Windows show the correct size drives?
Yes- going in
my computer', each drive shows as the right side

7. Are you using the cables that came with the drives. Should be ATA/133 cables. (Ones with the blue end
Yes

Concerning the  software , as you say , i do not need it.
When installing Windows 2000 i do need the floppy  for the ATA133 card - that i use for other drives , if i am not wrong-

I did search concerning the  48 bits LBA mode.
Microsoft has a patch for XP SP1 and 2000 SP2.
Look like the 48 bits is not set by default.

But i run SP3.
Or do i  have to understand that my install disc having Windows 2000 SP2 on it ,i have to use the patch and after upgrade to SP3?

Not only i am lost ,but really feed up as well.

Now ,a question : do anyone having 160-200-250 drives had fill them past the 137 mark?
I had for months my Maxtor 160 running fine ...until i past the 137 mark.
Anyway ,thanks a lot for the help

yes but both of them are firewire drives

I don't see a problem with what you have, not unless something is wrong with the BIOS

I have a reply to some of your answers, but I think the issue is with the 48 bit addressing.

2. How did you partition your drives?
I dont. They are only for mp3-Ape.

*You will still need a primary partition for the full 160 GB, it may be this way already, we can check later.

3. How did you format your drives?
From 'my computer ' format to NTSF' NOt quick
"enable compression ' NOT check

*This is fine.

5. Does your post screen show the correct size drives?
Not sure what ' post screen' is ,si i cannot answer you.

*The post screen is the first screen (text) that you see when you boot, it will list your video card, memory and harddrives.

6. Does Windows show the correct size drives?
Yes- going in
my computer', each drive shows as the right side.

*This could mean that Windows is reading the drive correctly, but can not address all blocks on the harddrive.

Concerning the  software , as you say , i do not need it.
When installing Windows 2000 i do need the floppy  for the ATA133 card - that i use for other drives , if i am not wrong.

*If you were just using the harddrives connected to your PC (without the cards that came with your drives ( IDE PCI cards) you would not need the floppy software, but since you are using the cards, Windows needs the drivers from the floppy to install the cards.

*Sounds like you have the patch, but need to check if it is enabled and enable if needed.
Here is a link I found... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305098

Now ,a question : do anyone having 160-200-250 drives had fill them past the 137 mark?
I had for months my Maxtor 160 running fine ...until i past the 137 mark.

*I am running Windows XP Pro with two 160GB drives in mirror and am close to 148GB.... running fine and I guess with Windows XP, I never needed to worry about the 48bit addressing.

*Good luck and let me know if you need help in your registry, someone could create you reg hack.

27 000+
first i can help you if you want more than 27 000 songs
LEGAL and not free , but fair price.

I do think the problem is with the 48 bits stuff.

As i said in my post before ,5 PM  here and i am on this problem - again...- since 10 this morning.
So now ,time for a drink and some music from my other drives - 120 , 60 and 20 who are working fine-.
I will have a look to the link tomorrow , waiting as well for an answer from motherboard support concerning this 48 bits problem
But not before monday i assume.
Again ,thank  to both of you  for the help- really-
Have a nice week end

PS: did you start the Replay/gain process?

Nope, have not started my gain process yet, need to buy more beer before I start, had a week off from work, but now have to go back.

As I see it, your problem has two solutions:

1. Need to make sure your registry has the 48 bit changes in it. (See my link above)

2. Your bios may need an update.

Did you get an E-Mail from your MB maker yet?

Have a good one.....

KingSparta, I was poking at you the other day, I did think your reply was amusing.

King , i think he wants to speak about his 'replay/gain' post when you gave him the  "a long time "answer'

And you are right ,i started in the times of Windows 95 , and ,until last month had a Pentium 3 and Windows ME.

I did an upgrade - Atlon XP 2000 and Windows 2000 - last month.
When my drives working as they must work ,i may keep his update for quite a long time.
I do not play games  , Windows 2000 is TOP , and the rip and burn speeds i get are quite fine to me.

I had to change my video card. The first one , a good one , did not like my machine.
I run now a more average and things are just fine.

27000+
I sent the mail to the motherboard support maybe after the start of the WE. I do not think i would have an answer before monday.

But ,i am sure they have nothing to do with the problem.

I am going now to go in the registery and change the values according to the article.
Look like it is not such a difficult thing to do under Windows 2000.

I let you know the result

You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters

To enable 48-bit LBA large-disk support in the registry:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1

Quit Registry Editor.

In value data , i cannot enter x . 0 ,yes 01 yes , but 0x1 no.

Any tip for a very lonesome computboy?

Just enter the value of 1

Should look like:

EnableBigLba  REG_DWORD  0x00000001 (1)

One typically means "Enable" while 0 means "Disabled"

I got the tip from a friend, did it ,and...
IT WORKS

Thank you very much for the help.

I saw many times on the web  about the same problem with XP , but never about 2000.

This was the problem.
Again ,thank you very much to have found the link.
If not for you ,i may be still searching how to get things working.

Have a nice coming week-end
