MC can be very slow to respond to user input
« on: December 20, 2013, 12:31:00 pm »

I just clicked on "Play" for a movie, and it took about 22 seconds to actually start playback.  This seems excessive.  I think it might be related to having my unRAID drives spun down when I try to play media (or even browse the library.)

I've been playing around with QoS settings in my router, and it seems to be helping, but if I'm downloading with SABnzbd using much of the available bandwidth, then try to browse MC after it's been dormant for some time, it just kind hands up and becomes unresponsive to user input for upwards of 30 seconds.  It can be very annoying, but luckily, it's not very often that it happens.

I have attached a log.  it would show a few shortish lags, and then near the very end, it should show a 20 second plus lag before a movie begins to play, with a shorter lag in browsing right before that.

Have you considered a problem with an antivirus program?

I am experiencing this all the time. When a song is playing and I click on another, it takes between 20 and 30 seconds to start playing. When I scroll down a screen of thumbnails, the program intermittently becomes unresponsive. I would love to find the solution to this. J River in general is very unresponsive on my system. It is especially bad when waking from sleep and I usually just have to restart the program to get it to work at all.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit with an AMD phenom 2, 6 core processor, 12 GB RAM, and an SSD drive for drive C. I have about 8 hard drives connected, both internally and through USB. I can sometimes hear them spinning up, but I don't think that is the whole problem.

What is the best way to troubleshoot this problem?

That isn't normal and it's probably not an MC problem.  It's likely to be something like the antivirus problems we often see.

I've not seen the severe hanging up since I last posted, until just a few minutes ago.  Unfortunately, I did not have Avast turned off, so I can't say for sure that Avast does not play a part.  However, assuming this does have something to do with Avast; what is the resolution?  I can't really justify running without AV all the time.  I try to pay attention while browsing, and am as careful as I can be, but I feel better with an AV running, just in case.  I am certainly not the only person running Avast and MC on Windows 7 x64.

As for the recent hangup, I had recently finished ripping an MKV and opened MC to look for something.  MC had not been running, so it had not had a chance to import the file.  I suspect it may be the import that is causing the hangups, but that's really just a guess.  Log attached.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but it seems excessive...

happened again, but this log looks related to Podcasts.  There is a lot of Podcast related messaging in the log, but I didn't look at Podcasts at all during this brief session.  i just opened MC, then navigated to another view, then it hung for several seconds (maybe 20 seconds).

Here is a snipit from the log...

You could try turning off podcasting in General/Features.

i turned off podcasting and also turned off Avast.  I opened MC just now, then browsed around a bid thru some video playlists, and all seemed quite responsive.  I then clicked on Images, and it took several seconds (maybe 10) before MC started responding again.  I then saved the log and posted below.  Hopefully there are some clues in there as to what's causing the hanging up.

I'm going to turn on Avast again now, but if you want me to test more later, I can turn it off again.

If it is Avast, turning it off may not be enough.  You may need to uninstall it.

If so, what is the AV software which MC can recommend, as I do not wish to go without an AV program running full-time?

We don't have any advice on what to use.  But uninstalling it may be the only way to see if it's causing the problem.  It's just a test.

Well, hopefully the logs can/will shed some light on what's causing the issue.  Surely there are thousands of users running MC with an AV program running that don't have this issue, so even if it is something to do with Avast, surely a solution can be found that does not force a user to run a machine without AV protection.

I'll wait until everyone is back from recovering from the flu and hopefully the logs will give us another path to pursue before I uninstall Avast.

Thanks again for the help, and have a great New Year!

Excluding the various processes in MSSE fixes performance issues for me on my Laptop.

I don't usually have to on bigger machines, but on my laptop for whatever reason, I have to exclude MediaCenter19.exe, JRService.exe, and some other pieces of MC to get it to behave.
