I have a pair of Xonar D2's, and I've decided to do some modding to one.
I can install and run both cards in my PC, so A/B testing should be easy to perform.
I know a lot has been done with Xonar ST/STX's, but I'm blazing a new trail with the D2.
I plan on replacing the OPAmps for the front channel output. On my card, they are soldered in place (ST/STX use sockets). I'd like to solder in place some DIP8 sockets for testing various OPAmps. Intrigued with the non IC Burson units.
Replacing/adding capacitors on this circuit as well.
Another big improvement can be had with modding the power supply.
Poor design using a 7812 and 7912 regulators when input voltage is so close to the input limits of these reg's. They like to see in excess of 12.5V to function properly. I might try an external 12V and -12V power supply or replace the 7XXX with a different unit. Burson also makes a pretty sweet regulator designed as 7XXX replacements. Super clean and super steady. Also upgrading the caps onboard for smoothing the PS.
And another piece that needs help is the crystal clock/oscillator. Again, Burson makes a very accurate clock with its own clean power supply.
