[19.0.96] Outputting part of a value [SOLVED]
« on: December 23, 2013, 05:27:48 am »

So, I have a couple of albums containing tracks that are collaborations i.e. by more than one artist. Therefore, the [Artist] field has two or more artists indicated, separated by semicolons. When using a view with [Artist] as the topmost level, this causes the relevant albums to appear within the discographies of two different artists at once. That is fine, but when editing the thumbnail text to say the following:

RatingStars() [Rating]
[Artist]
[Duration]

[Artist] returns [Artist] 1; [Artist] 2, which is problematic. For example, in the case of the album, In the Fishtank 14, a collaboration by Isis and Aereogramme, it returns "Aereogramme; Isis" for Aereogramme's discography (it is the only work involving Aereogramme that I have), and outputs "[Various]" for Isis' discography. I want the former to just say "Aereogramme" and the latter to just say "Isis".

What do?

Normally, you would group by [Album Artist] or [Album Artist (auto)] rather than [Artist]
This would put albums by an artist in a group together, but avoid pulling individual tracks off compilation discs.
[Album Artist (auto)] will set the Album Artist to "(Multiple Artists)" if there's more than one artist listed on an album, and no explicit Album Artist field, so I normally fill out the Album Artist field when tagging albums to prevent this.

I'm not really sure how to handle a collaborative EP like In the Fishtank 14 though, as I don't think Album Artist can contain more than one entry.

Agree with 6233638. I've tidied up my library using sensible entries for [Album Artist].

It helps keep the presentation of albums streamlined when viewing  in Standard View > Audio > Albums

The use of Various or Multiple Artists is fine as a default but it's not conducive to a clean looking library.

Sensible use of [Album Artist] is a very handy way of keeping audio files grouped, even when they've got multiple contributors to the one album.

Right, and I have been grouping by [Album Artist (auto)] up to this point, and will probably settle for doing so and having a grouping of "Isis" and another of "Isis & Aereogramme" if what I'm asking for is impossible (unless you have another suggestion). Thing is, that becomes crazy when you get non-split collaborations with more than two collaborators.

Replace [Artist] with [Name].

Note:  this trick will only work with the top/parent level of an Artist View.  If your view goes Artist -> Album, in the child level Album view you will need to use [Artist] which will return Aereogramme; Isis.  Or [Album Artist (auto)] as others suggested.
