I think something is a little odd in the open/close/seek logic in the alsa driver. That's one of the things that's on the list. At this point, still working on stability. We'd like it to be rock solid before digging into the bug/features list. I use it all the time at home and work it's running on 5 or so test platforms. I have noticed that the hardware device choices tend to open/close more cleanly than pulseaudio. It could be that there is some kind of timing issue involved in closing and reopening the device.

Bob, et al,
  Since I am having so much trouble creating "smartlists" based on single and multiple genres on these current beta editions of MC19 for Linux, should I run a "trial" download of MC 19 for Windows onto my Windows XP or 7 computers to see if I can successfully reproduce the smart lists and "skip genre" editing I currently am using on the old Music Jukebox 8?

I just cannot seem to make MC 19 successfully create these lists and I am in the process of switching over to Linux Mint Debian Edition. The problems with MC 19 for Linux are my big hold-up as I use my computer to a large extent for music.

fwiw, afaict, smartlist creation methodology and feature set is exactly the same in the Windows and Linux versions.  On Linux, the Load/Save options don't work on the "Import/Export" function, but that is a known issue (related to "common dialog" support) and does not materially affect the manual process of creating a smartlist.

If you happened to have followed my posts here (which have been too numerous), I have 2 problems with MC19:

1) Creating "smartlists" with several genres such as torch, female vocal, Christmas, etc. 

2) Being able to find out how to not play (skip) a genre (such as Christmas) while playing any songlist.

I can do both of the above on my old Windows MJ8, which actually works on LMDE, except for recognizing my dvd/cd input and the equalizer on MJ8. Therefore I've been using (on Linux) Banshee to download music from a cd into my music file, and then importing it into MJ8, compressing it, and tagging it with genre(s) there. 

BTW, the reason I posted the question re: a trial of MC19 on Windows is because there appears to be  no working "Help" section on MC19 Linux.

You may not get everything you need or want in MC for Linux.  It's new.  You'll need to decide whether you can live with that for now.

Okay, I'm assuming there must be major differences with how new MC versions handle smartlist creation vs. older MediaJukeBox instances, so yeah, looking at the Windows version of MC19 might still be foreign to you.  However, it's really, really easy to do what you want for your issue #1.  Super easy, create a new smartlist (F9), just click a few boxes, hit OK and then wham-o, off you go.

For your second issue, you can follow Mr. C's advice regarding -[Genre]="Christmas" during playback of a smartlist --OR-- you can try to replicate the way you have it set up in MediaJukeBox into MC19.  IOWs, perhaps there is a simple mapping.  So, how did you set it up in MediaJukeBox to handle your issue #2?
