Can see library but cannot stream any content?
« on: November 02, 2015, 09:35:11 am »

Hello, very new JRiver user here!

I have the JRiver Media Center server set up and running on a PC at home.  Right now, I am trying to stream audio to my work PC.  I have checked that my iPhone (JRemote) is able to stream a given song over it's data network.  Additionally, my android tablet (JRemote) is also able to stream the same song over my work wifi.  However, when I try to stream the song using the Windows JRiver Media Center client, it says "Opening..." for a while, and then ultimately tells me "Something went wrong with playback."

tldr;

  • I believe I have successfully connected to my remote library because I can see and search through all of my audio files.
  • Mobile apps appear to connect and stream fine both on and off of my work network.
  • Desktop client fails to stream any song

Any suggestions?

[Edit] Adding log snippet.  I see a connection time out in there, but I don't know why the connection times out on the dekstop client but not the android app.  I've been streaming from the app all day. Would much prefer to use the desktop client though.  Any help appreciated.

[Edit 2]  If I copy paste the GetFile URL from the log file into my browser, I am able to download and or play the file through the browser, so I know it is accessible.

I'm really just guessing here, but as you can stream externally to your ipad/android devices, means to me your router set-up is fine.  I'd look to see if there is a firewall problem which is causing delays and a time-out on the work PC? Its also possible that your client config is wrong I suppose .. are you using authentication?

On the MC client connecting to the server under Options->Media Network->Client Options->Audio Conversion you could set "Don't Convert Audio"  and see if that makes any difference.

Thank you for the feedback.  A few more notes:

  • Ii am using authentication, but I have tried both with and without auth.
  • Audio Conversion is set to "Don't convert audio"
  • Encoder is set to MP3 Low Bandwidth (not what I want but just trying to get anything to play)
  • There is a rule in my pc firewall settings allowing MC to do inbound and outbound connections.  Though there could easily be additional firewall rules for the network as a whole that I would have no access too.

I believe I have confirmed that the issue is with my works network firewall.  I usually keep my tablet on the "guest-wifi" when at work and JRemote works fine there.  But when I try switching my tablet to the "primary wifi" account that my PC uses, I can't stream anything.  It's odd that MC get's blocked since I have been able to stream from Plex and other services hosted at my home.

Guess I'll have to keep streaming from my tablet or phone at work :(

It does sound like your client PC is being blocked for outgoing access on port 52199 (or does it have some kind of proxy setup in the networking?).

Just wanted to give an update in case this can help anyone else.  By switching the port that my J River Media Server serves on I was able to stream and play my music at work.  My work's firewall appeared to be blocking the default port of 51299, so I switched to port 80 and that seemed to resolve the issue.

Since port 80 works, it's very likely that your work is using a proxy server, not a firewall.
