My understanding is that transcoding is only supported for DLNA functionaility currently and not for file conversion, storage and future playback by MC?  MC records in JTV or TS file format.  I choose TS so I can do simple transcoding of MPEG video to more efficient H.264 at same resolution and image quality using MCEBuddy, it can save a lot of disk space on large TS files.  I create an MKV file of the TV program and then do some simple editing with Avidemux.  I then rename the file, hopefully with the correct details so that a sidecar file with pertinent info can be created by JR after pulling data from IMDB ... if the content is actually documented in IMDB ... more arcane programs are not.  Are there any plans to directly support this type of capability in MC? If not then maybe add to the wish list?

Just to clarify, what i would like is for JRiver to be able to create offline/non-realtime a more efficiently compressed file in a standard editable container and also to embed the tags it obtains at the time the program is recorded so I don't have to manually add tags afterwards and mess around changing TS sidecar files or extracting and manually entering the data.  The additional Avidemux editing may be asking for too much but hey why not while I'm here?

I am not sure if whether I understand you correctly.  Have you explored Tools > Advanced Tools > Convert Format?
