Major issues
« on: January 24, 2014, 01:39:08 pm »

Hey,

Since doing a clean install of Win8.1 Pro x64 and MC19 (104 and 108) I can't do anything in Media Center for more than a few minutes without it crashing. YouTube via IE is fine.

I've toggled these settings and it makes no difference:

Bitstreaming On|Off
WASAPI On|Off
Hardware accel. On|Off
Video Clock On|Off
Red October Standard|HQ

The only other thing I've done is re-configure Theater View menus. My media is on a cabled NAS box. I've used the latest drivers for the video card (ATI 5450).

Please help! Same hardware never had these problems on MC18.

PS: I don't use any AV software other than what's built-in to Windows 8, and OS and MC are installed on an SSD.

See if switching back to 104 helps.

I had these problems on 104. Only went to 108 to see if it would fix them!

Sorry, I see above that you mentioned that.  Duh.  Drive through.

We've seen problems with Microsoft's Security Essentials in the past, if that's what you're using.  No virus checker should ever be set to check media files.

I've never seen MSSE or Windows Defender make it crash.

Hang frequently?  Yes.  Crash?  No.

I suspect a driver issue or other hardware problem.

There's definitely issues and not sure I understand why I why would change my antivirus settings as it never interfered with any other programs nor was it an issue before the few latest MC19 builds.  I'm happy to see I'm not the only one and I have stability issues on my 2 PC + one laptop.

I promise next time I'll log it in :)

You need to try a few things to eliminate possible causes of the problem.  108 is pretty stable in general.

The original poster said "YouTube via IE is fine."  What does that mean?  Is this a problem only with Youtube?

More details, please.

Jim,

I mentioned YouTube via IE is fine because at first I suspected graphics card driver problems, but it plays HD videos fine from within IE. Basically, I can leave the PC on forever without Media Center loaded and it's fine.

Just now, simply going into Theater View caused a crash. 5 minutes later, it got into Theater View OK, and I managed to get to the Movie library, then after a few seconds of scrolling it crashed.

Standard View seems fine, so I'd say it's Theater View only at the moment. I'll try playing a film from Standard View and see what happens.

AV is only what is built-in to Windows 8. Not sure if it's MSE or not.

As contrasted to Standard View, Theater View gets stuff from the Internet . So it's possible that your security software is causing a problem at that point.

You could go to tools/Options/Theater View/Appearance/Theme/Online Media SlideShow and turn off everything there as a test.

Cheers,
Rod

Please separate what works from what doesn't.

Standard View works fine, Theater View doesn't.  Is that right?

Is it always a problem with video?  Youtube?

Or is music also a problem?

Please see if you can determine the pattern for when it happens.

If the problem is only in Theater View, and not when playing Youtube, then my first guess would be a video driver problem.  Theater View uses 3D drawing.  Standard View does not.

Currently about 70% of the way through Aladdin DVD, launched from Standard View. No problems at all.

I have had Theater View crash about 10 mins into a film, on launch, scrolling through media types (music, videos, pictures etc. - not just one type). So it's not that doing one thing, or sequence, is causing it.

As above, just launching Theater View has caused it to crash.

Oh, I have also tried switching the browser from Chrome to IE. No difference.

Not sure if it's just 111 that has fixed it, or the fact I've been playing with resolution and madVr settings, but I don't seem to have any more problems...?
