Hauppauge HD PVR 2 setup help
« on: February 02, 2014, 04:49:11 am »

I am trying to configure television to use my HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition to record signals from my AT&T Uverse STB and I can not scan for channels due to the fact that the channel list
is empty. To me it makes sense that it would be empty since it is a capture device not a tuner but not being able to enter a "channel" breaks the process.

The first problem I see is that the device is reported as analog but it is digital as far as the computer is concerned as it has it's own hardware H.264 encoder and sends pure digital
information to the computer over USB.

I have gone through the configuration for the device and set the tuner to disabled which to me is the logical choice although I have tried all options.

So my question is how do I scan for channels on a device that is not a tuner or how do I add USB as a channel.

Just a suggestion:
If the selection for "Capture device that receives signal from STB" has tuner set to disabled disable the
"Analog channel on which to receive signal from STB" option so the process can continue.

Some details:
MC version - 19.0.113
HD PVR 2 driver - 1.5.31308 (latest)
JRTelevision.dll - reply #7 from this post.

Please try this DLL.  We needed to do some customization to support this device.

No difference.
Is there something special I need to do before scanning for channels.
I tried to manually add a STB channel but the drop down for input is empty when I select Hauppauge Siena... for capture device.

Try doing a analog cable channel scan using the device and see if you can get "channels" like "Video Composite In", "Video SVideo In", "Video YRYBY In", and "Video SerialDigital In".

Email me a log file.  yaobing at jriver dot com

I tried doing an analog channel scan selecting both cable and antenna with no luck. I had a look in the log and it mentioned a possible cause was another application using the driver so I did a diagnostic boot through msconfig to ensure no other application or service was using the driver. Unfortunately doing a bare necessities boot did not make a difference.

Thanks for the logs.

The error messages sometimes do not reflect the real situation :(

We had trouble connecting filters in your case.  I made some tweaks.  Please try again with this DLL.

Well I knew as soon as I started MC with the new dll we were getting somewhere as I had items appear in the advanced field.

At first I was only getting audio so I did some investigating to see if I could find a solution. I found this "Note: You will not see
video on your TV set until you run Hauppauge Capture once" on the Hauppauge website. I decided to give it a shot even though
I had previously run Haup' Capture, when Capture launched it gave me an error about not being able to access the device.
I am sure that was due to the fact that MC was connected to it, I clicked OK and video appeared in MC. I went back into mcsonfig
enabled the Hauppauge service HcwDevCentralService and rebooted to see if it would work without launching the Haup' Capture exe.
Everything seems to be working fine, I am not sure if the service is needed because it is stopped while watching I am going to leave
it be though and just be happy it is working now.

Thank you very much for your excellent support.

I just received mine and after a bit of mucking about I have it working in MC from my STB, but had some issues.  I Needed to Enabling "Start analog channels in time-shifting mode" as without this checked:
1) ROHQ  -  Would not work under RO-HQ (MadVr).  The filter chain would load but I just get a black screen and no audio
2) Lip Sync -  The Lip Sync is way out in RO-STD (EVR)

EDIT: Updated

Couple of other issues are:

1) Can not Record:  If I try to record to a TS file, I get the following error about a conflict (there is none) but it does produce a 3 Sec recording.  These brief recordings look pretty good with the correct 25fps frame rates.  If I try to record to a JTV format I get the same error but the recording is created (or at least the Time Shifting file remains).

2) Wrong Frame Rates:  More of an issue is that Live TV / JTV is being recorded at NTSC stream rates (eg 29.97 according to madVR) resulting in poor quality playback instead of the source 25fps.

Edit - Update

Yaobing, I've emailed a log showing:
- Initial Tune and playback of the stream at the incorrect 29.97fps
- Commenced Recording that created a 3 Sec TS file + the conflict error
- Playing the 3 Sec TS recording at the correct 25fps

Thanks
Nathan

Nathan,

Your log shows that MC sets video standard to NTSC.  We choose video standard according to country code.  Have you selected your country on TV Options page?

It appears that you were using the computer as a client.  Recording on the client computer is not supported, only live playback is.  That might explain the strange behavior on recording.

Hi Yaobing,
I've retested using a Local Library (and this addresses the recording), but I have the same issue with:
- Live TV being played as NTSC not PAL
- JTV Recordings are in NTSC not PAL
- TS Recording are in PAL!

Here is the pic of my setup - country is set to Australia

Can send more logs if needed and happy to try any suggestions

Thanks

Odd - I've moved the PVR 2 to another PC (my main one) and it is playing and recording to JTV just fine.  Appart from the PC being different, I'm now running my HDMI output from the AVR instead of directly from the STB (but I don't "think" this should have made a difference)

Mmmm - went into the filters to change some settings and while the don't seem to "stick" they do seem to cause this issue, as I was then back to NTSC viewing.  Tried an uninstall (and remove driver) / reinstall and still NTSC.  Did a system restore and back to PAL.

Looks like Yaobing has narrowed it down.  If you go into the HD PVR 2 Filter Settings from MC, it ends up overwriting the value in the registry setting for "TV Standard"

from the PAL setting of:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center ##\TV Settings\[Big String for the HD PVR]\TV Standard = 10 (hex)

to the NTSC setting of
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center ##\TV Settings\[Big String for the HD PVR]\TV Standard = 1 (hex)

The old HDPVR has option to output either AC3 or AAC on its property pages.  But on HDPVR 2 I can not find such option.  On "Hauppauge Capture" application, there is an Advanced button where you can do some settings.  I only find (under Audio Encoder): .TS Audio:  MPEG I Layer II or AAC.

The latest log from Nathan indicates that there is a bug in the device driver.  If the user opens the device property pages and try to set video standard to anything value, it reverts to NTSC_M.  That was the cause of playback problem.  The work around is to change the registry value (the location was posted by Nathan above)  "TV Standard" from NTSC (0x1) to PAL (0x10), for people living in PAL land,  and do not touch the property pages again.

Also, do you find that you have to reboot the PVR from time to time?  I find that after a while (under 1 day) the MC just sits on "Starting.." but once I power cycle the device it is then fine.

I also just had it freeze MC on me!  ...and to reboot the PC and then the PVR as it would not then connect.  I was expecting it to be a 24x7 device like my other TV Tuners so I could use MC to view the STB from any MC Client.  Kinda pointless otherwise.

FYI - I found a few posts saying the freezing is due to heat and to just flip it over so the vents are on the top - I'll see how that goes.

I'm starting to think is thing is Junk  :-[  Got more stalls but now I'm not seeing any video in MC (though I do in their own Capture Program).  The device will start, I get the Audio but just Black Video (in both RO and ROHQ).  Tried all the usual power cycling the PC, Splitter, PVR, even changed sources.

Logs sent to Yaobing.

Thanks

...also is anyone using the included IR blaster to control a STB from the PVR?

I had used it (with HD PVR 1) few years ago with MS WIN7 MCE. Two yrs ago I switched to JRiver and found it's too complicated to configure it. Documentation wasn't clear enough for me, but the main reason I didn't configure it was my laziness and lack of time. I use one programmable remote for all devices at home and it's sufficient, but if I'll find some time I would like to setup IR blaster again.

With HD PVR 1 I found that when STB go to standby then it's turn on again AND HD PVR audio in is set to digital then PVR must be hardware restarted. When HD PVR is set for analog audio in (I have connected both cables analog & spdif) then everything is ok and there's no need for reset. Maybe the same situation is with HD PVR 2?

I looked at the log but could not find anything that points to the cause of black screen.  I did notice an extremely slow start of the graph (9 seconds).  The device seems to be slow to respond.  The video format detected by the graph was AVC and the audio was AAC.  Do you know if your video feed was AVC?

The orignal video feed to the PVR2 is MPEG2 but it (I presume) alsways then transcodes it to AVC, anything you want me to try?

That was what I figured.  I am at a loss.

Any success yet on the HD PVR2. A friend has a Colossus and would like to tune from a second STB. I suggested a HD PVR2 yesterday, but now am hesitant that it works. Should he get another Colossus?

PVR2 does work for me, but I am also seeing some instabilities as jmone saw, as it requires hard restart once in a while.

Another Colussus is not a bad idea.  The next build of MC20 will have some improvement on using multiple identical devices.

I am trying to configure television to use my HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition to record signals from my AT&T Uverse STB
greetings. i came across this thread and wondered if anyone had made progress on this. i am thinking of getting the hd pvr 2 and wondering how to incorporate it into my setup.

can i use it to record without involving a computer? a related question is if displays a menu on the hdtv. does the remote/menu only work with wintv?

what i was hoping for is receiver -> pvr -> tv
                                                   |
                                                   v
                                               storage

i would like for storage to be a simple usb external drive but, i'm getting the impression that if i want the pvr to schedule recordings, it will need to be a pc.

I am not aware of any way of recording with HD PVR 2 without involving a PC.

On a PC with JRiver Media Center, you can set up this device as the capture device, and feed it with your cable STB.

I've never got mine to be reliable.  Always seems to freeze requiring a reboot.  It's in a drawer gathering dust.

I recently contacted Hauppauge about it and they determined that my device was defective and let me return it.  Mine was bought a little over a year ago.  Their warranty for this device is 2 years.  I have not received the replacement device from them yet.

It has been a few weeks since I got my PVR2 Game Edition replacement back from Hauppauge.  It has been running fine.  I run it once in a while in MC just to test, feeding it HDMI video from a camcorder.  I do not have to reboot it.
