How do I unsynchronise libraries?
« on: February 04, 2014, 07:46:02 am »

I regularly change libraries and want to be able to de- or unsynchronise old libraries. For instance there is a library on the network which is only available via wi-fi which I sometimes want to avoid for sound quality reasons. I only have the library I want in the auto-import but it also brings in libraries I don't want. Any input appreciated.

If you don't select and load those other Libraries, they will not be used by your currently in-use MC.

The OP may not be using the word library as you and I would.

Great point - a re-read seems to imply collections within folders, and that certain folders should be avoided.

You may be right about wording. But I can't see how to stop it showing folders apart from the one I want to use. How make it forget those folders exist perhaps?

Please describe the folder paths you are mentioning, and how you have MC configured to know about these folders.

I use import/auto configure to find folders. At present it is set to find music in one folder on a connected HDD. But it also shows folders on drives that are no longer attached and folders that it can see on the network via wi-fi. A typical file path is

/Volumes/Downloads/artist/album

So I get multiple versions of the same tracks.

What I want to do is just have it show the folders I specify, is that possible?

Thanks

Yes, it is possible, and there are several ways to accomplish this, and that will depend entirely on your needs and how you've configured MC.

First, in Tools > Import > Configure Auto Import, remove any paths you do not want MC to use for automatically importing media references.

Second, if you want to remove certain paths from MC's library, use the Search Wizard and set a Rule to examine Filename (path), looking for those paths you want to remove from MC.  MC will narrow the list of files to only those with the path you specified.  You can now select all the files, and hit the Delete key.  Use the first option selected, to just remove items from MC's library (the second and third option will delete the media files themselves).

If you don't want to remove the references from MC's library, but just want to filter them out for general use, there are several techniques for this.  Ask for more help if this is the direction you want to go (but I'm assuming it isn't).

You're welcome.  And special thanks to Listener who caught the subtlety that I missed.

You did the heavy lifting here and in a number of other posts.  A high quality public service.

I can't type much without pain so I'm selective in my comments.

It's all team work, so equal credit to all.

I've typed so much the past couple of weeks, I'm also feeling some pain from strain.  Chronic pain isn't much fun.  Best wishes.
