ASIO vs. WASAPI for AMD ATI Sound Card and Windows 7 OS
« on: February 16, 2014, 04:33:18 pm »

Hi,

I haven't downloaded J River yet but I have a Dell desktop PC with an AMD ATI HD W76 card with Windows 7 as the OS. With such a card, which platform would yield the theoretically best bit-perfect sound quality, ASIO or WASAPI? I understand WASAPI was designed specifically for the Windows OS.

Welcome to the forum.  ASIO comes with the audio hardware, when available.  Either one will be fine.  Our wiki has several audio topics that describe what JRiver recommends.

I don't think AMD provide an ASIO driver, so WASAPI is your only option.

Thank you Jim H.,

I did see that one of the Wiki's said to start with ASIO and then try WASAPI after that. Is that the Wiki you meant?

Probably.  But only if your device comes with an ASIO driver.

I'm not sure if it does or doesn't.
It's an AMD ATI.
How can I tell if it does or doesn't contain ASIO support?
